CHAMPIONS seem to produce their best under pressure, and that was certainly the case in round one with four midfield superstars – Gary Ablett, Trent Cotchin, Scott Pendlebury and Joel Selwood – achieving perfect 10s in the AFL Coaches' Association award.

Each member of this brilliant quartet led his side to victory in thrillers featuring wildly fluctuating fortunes and was rewarded by the coaches as the standout.

A fifth midfield gun, Brownlow medallist Jobe Watson, had been widely tipped to receive maximum votes after Essendon's inspiring win over Adelaide at AAMI Stadium, but the Bombers' skipper (eight votes) was overshadowed by a four-goal performance from teammate Ben Howlett (nine).

Three others received 10 votes – Kieren Jack in first game as the Sydney Swans' co-skipper, Fremantle's David Mundy 10 in his side's Western Derby win, and Western Bulldogs ruckman Will Minson, who has started the season superbly after finishing outside the top 10 in the Dogs' best and fairest last year.

Minson's teammate Brett Goodes, 29, capped off a fairytale debut, receiving four votes against the Brisbane Lions to be equal-third best afield according to the coaches.

Former Port Adelaide and Fremantle player Nick Lower, in his first game for the Bulldogs, was also recognised for restricting Michael Tuck medallist Daniel Rich to just eight touches.

A surprise was that Richmond star Brett Deledio received just one vote after being widely regarded as one of the most influential factors in the Tigers' narrow win over Carlton.

Just one North Melbourne player – skipper Andrew Swallow (six) – received votes in their cliffhanger loss to Collingwood, while six Magpies were saluted.

And not a single Melbourne player received a vote, compared to seven Power players.
