The Tiwi Bombers are set to become the Northern Territory Football League's newest team as they prepare to commence a seven-week trial in the competition from Saturday.The team from the Tiwi Islands will achieve its long-time dream of entering the league when it faces St Mary's in the opening match of the 2006/07 NTFL competition on Saturday October 14.The Island already hosts the annual Tiwi football league Grand Final, which is attended by fans from across Australia, and has impressive football pedigree having produced AFL players such as Maurice Rioli, Dean Rioli and Michael Long.The new team will assist in inspiring a community where the average life expectancy is 48 and suicide is prevalent, while the development of the Clontarf Academy and a new school will also ensure a better future for its residents.Essendon has been influential in making the Island's dream a reality and club chief executive Peter Jackson said it was a positive move to assist the struggling community."Essendon has developed some great links to Tiwi Island through Michael Long and Dean Rioli and it is fantastic to think these links will be further strengthened through the establishment of the Tiwi Island Bombers and the red and black colours", Jackson said."We understand the formation of this team will be very beneficial to the Tiwi Island community on a numbers of levels and it was that which really attracted us to the partnership This football club firmly believes in the positive impact sport can have in the lives of people - particularly the adolescent community - and we hope that we can provide a measure of support that will ensure this is the case on Tiwi Island."The Tiwi Bombers play St Mary's at TIO Stadium at 2.30 pm on Saturday October 14.
