FREMANTLE big man Luke Jackson is open to extending his contract at the Dockers after conjecture about his future at the club, with the versatile tall ruling out any return to play in Victoria.
Jackson has a deal with the Dockers that will take him through to the end of 2029, but Victorian clubs have believed he could be open to returning to Melbourne, where he spent much of his summer break and where his partner, former Australian netballer Kelsey Browne, is from.
Gettable reported last week that Jackson had indicated to his former Melbourne teammates he could look at a comeback to the Demons, but that he had also told Fremantle he would not be seeking a move.
AFL.com.au believes his future with the Dockers has been reinforced by the 23-year-old being open to extending his deal beyond its current remaining four seasons after this year.
Fronting the media on Monday ahead of his 100th career game, Jackson said those conversations would be left to his management. He was categoric, however, when asked if he would be playing with Fremantle long term.
"I definitely will. I love Freo, I love playing at Freo and I've always wanted to play here since I was a little kid," Jackson said.
"I grew up supporting the club and I always remember watching the games. I'll definitely be here and I've loved my time here."
Jackson said he could categorically rule out a return to Victoria and also denied suggestions he had been pushing for a return to Melbourne with his ex-Demons teammates.
"That's all rubbish to be honest. We played them a few weeks ago in Mandurah, I won a premiership with them, and I've got good relationships with them," he said.
"I obviously give them the time of day and some of my best mates are in that team."
Melbourne has loomed as the club most likely to chase Jackson if he was to pursue interest back in Victoria, given ruckman Max Gawn turns 34 this year and is coming to the final years of his magnificent career.
Jackson has played 47 consecutive games for the Dockers since crossing to the club at the end of 2022 after three years with the Demons, who selected him at pick No.3 in the 2019 draft.
He had 16 disposals and 39 hitouts in Fremantle's 78-point loss to Geelong on Saturday in round one.
The Dockers could turn to Jackson as their No.1 ruck against Sydney this week after increasing his onball time during the Cats loss and playing big man Liam Reidy inside 50 for longer periods.
The 23-year-old said he was ready to go physically if moved into the role during Sean Darcy's absence.
"Definitely. I've played that role multiple times in my career and I love being around the ball and feel comfortable there," he said.
"If that's the role 'JL' (coach Justin Longmuir) has for me, I'll definitely do it. It's up to 'JL' and the coaches really about what best fits the team."
Jackson arrived at Fremantle with the ability to play as a ruck, tall forward or even a big-bodied midfielder, but the team's structural needs have mostly required him to play as a third tall in attack.
Asked if he saw himself ideally as a forward/ruck or No.1 ruck, Jackson said: "I see myself playing everywhere to be honest.
"I think my game can be very flexible and it's a very exciting thing we can dip into for years to come.
"I love being around the ball, I love going forward and impacting there, but it can change every week so we don't know."
