On Tuesday morning Collingwood players Anthony Rocca and Harry O’Brien attended a ‘Footy and Food’ Breakfast held at St Kilda’s Stokehouse Restaurant.

The breakfast was held to promote the start of a four week campaign to promote the “White Ribbon Day” an international day for the elimination of violence against women.

Over the past few years, the AFL and the Collingwood Football Club ha supported this cause to promote a problem that continues to exist in present day society.

“It is embarrassing that this problem continues to exist in today’s world,” O’Brien said.

“It’s important to promote the voice and problem of violence against women and it needs to be dealt with."

AFL Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Demetriou, was on hand to help promote this worldwide cause.

Mr Demetriou said that as a community we must continue to encourage men to speak out that violence against women is never acceptable.

“I’m proud to be a White Ribbon Ambassador and lead our organisation and the football fraternity in the fight against this issue. We know it’s about changing cultures and about changing attitudes that have been ingrained in our society for too long.”

White Ribbon Day, marked each year on November 25, aims to increase awareness of the impact and consequences of violence in the lives of women and children in our communities, and encourages men from all walks of life to join together in leading the charge against its prevention.

The White Ribbon Foundation of Australia aims to eliminate violence against women by promoting culture-change around the issue.
