NORM Smith Medallist Luke Hodge has undergone surgery on his shoulder, sustaining an injury soon after the commencement of Hawthorn's pre-season training.

Hodge aggravated the joint last week with scans revealing that the 24-year-old had damaged cartilage.

Consultation with a specialist confirmed that surgery would avoid the risk of the injury re-surfacing during the season.

The setback should not affect Hodge's start to 2009, however, he will miss the club's training camp to Coffs Harbour in New South Wales this week.

Hodge played 20 games this season, winning All-Australian selection ahead of a pivotal role in the Hawks' finals campaign and its first premiership in 17 years.

He has played 132 matches since his 2002 debut.
