North Melbourne rookie Ben Speight (22 disposals, 7 marks, 3 tackles, 1 goal, 4 behinds) will be forced to do some goal kicking practice this week after another inaccurate game in front of the big sticks for Werribee on Sunday.
Picked up by the Kangaroos in the 2008 rookie draft, Speight has taken his game to a new level this year and is eligible to play AFL games after coach Brad Scott made him the club’s eligible rookie player.
While Speight is proving to be a handy acquisition in the midfield, his goal kicking has left a lot to be desired with one goal and eight behinds to his name from the past two matches.
Even despite his wayward performance, the 20 year-old could be in line for a debut against Richmond on Sunday.
Kangaroos’ draftee Jamie Macmillan (16 disposals, 3 tackles, 4 spoils) was assigned one of the VFL’s toughest tasks: shut down goal kicking machine Nicholas Sautner.
It was the second time this season the pair has been matched up and Macmillan again dominated despite being less experienced and not as strong.
Sautner’s two goals came from easy handballs close to goal but he was comprehensively beaten by the fast-developing 18 year-old.
Macmillan and Speight were both named among the best players on the ground and forward Nathan O’Keefe (17 disposals, 6 marks, 3 goals) was unlucky not to join them.
Despite receiving a heavy knock, O’Keefe kicked three goals from four attempts and helped the Tiger’s to their third win of the season.
Alan Obst (15 disposals, 7 marks) suffered from the same problems as Ben Speight managing just four behinds as he continues to evolve as a key forward while Conor Meredith (9 disposals, 4 marks) played down back and on the wing.
In the reserves match, North rookie Matthew Scott (30 disposals, 5 marks, 1 goal) put on a show and collected 16 kicks and 14 handballs with fellow Kangaroos’ listed player Ayden Kennedy (12 disposals, 4 marks, 7 tackles, 3 behinds) back for his first game after a foot injury.
