The Smithy’s VFL teams for Round 3.
Luckless Brisbane Lions defender Tom Doedee will make his latest ACL comeback among a star-studded list of inclusions for a big Smithy’s VFL Round 3 fixture this week.
Doedee, who has played just one game since first injuring his knee at Adelaide in 2023, will line up for the Lions against fellow undefeated team Richmond at Swinburne Centre on Saturday.
After crossing to the Lions at the end of the 2023 season, Doedee made his VFL debut in Round 1 last year, only to tear the ligament again at training the lead-up to his AFL comeback the following week.
The Lions also regain Luke Lloyd from injury, Conor McKenna from AFL substitute duties and talented young forward Tristen Meekin, but will be without ruckman Darcy Fort and forwards Darcy Craven and Jack Manly.
Richmond will unveil another highly touted draft selection in No. 7 pick Josh Smillie, who has overcome a hamstring injury to make his VFL debut alongside AFL regular Hugo Ralphsmith, who returns from his own hamstring, and Austin Johnson.
However, the star of the past two games, Kane McAuliffe, is injured and last week’s hero Joel Garner has been managed among five changes.
Logan McDonald will play his first VFL game for Sydney since 2022 in his opening hitout of the year after finally overcoming the ankle injury that ruined his 2024 AFL Grand Final.
McDonald will be joined in the Swans’ team by best-and-fairest winner Caleb Mitchell, VFL onballer Ben Edwards, intercept defender Patrick Snell and Academy debutant Tom Hitchens to take on a similarly strengthened North Melbourne at Arden St on Sunday.
Young ball magnet George Wardlaw will step out for the Kangaroos for the first time this year after a serious hamstring injury, with Will Phillips and Toby Pink returning from AFL duties, while first-round draftee Matt Whitlock debuts at the highest level and Zac Fisher and Eddie Ford are injured.
Carlton has selected its most powerful VFL team in some time to take on Southport at IKON Park on Saturday night, naming 16 AFL-listed players including key pair Harry McKay and Elijah Hollands.
Corey Durdin, Matt Carroll, Hudson O’Keeffe and Rob Monahan will all return from injury, while draftees Lucas Camporeale and Harry O’Farrell will make their VFL debuts.
However, captain Liam McMahon has been managed, Ashton Moir was promoted, Logan Prout will sadly miss the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered against Box Hill in Round 1 and Will Hayes has been surprisingly dropped.
The Sharks made just one change, with Grand Final forward Jack Sexton returning in place of Darby Scott.
Collingwood has also stocked up for its clash with Coburg at the newly named Barry Plant Park on Sunday, selecting skipper Sam Glover, big man Mason Cox, fellow AFL premiership player Oleg Markov, VFL great Tom Wilson and young midfielder Fin Macrae for his 50th VFL game.
The Lions will celebrate their own milestone as Josh D’Intinosante returns to also bring up a half-century, while Josh May helps him replace injured pair Ryan Sturgess and Dom Payman.
Sturgess has been ruled out for two months with a serious hamstring – a terrible blow for the club after losing Kyle Weightman for three months to the same injury.
St Kilda’s No.10 draft pick Alix Tauru heads a list of five players who will pull on the yellow, black and blue for the first time in a new-look Sandringham team that travels to Blacktown International Sports Park to meet the GWS Giants.
Key defender Tauru has shaken off a back injury to make it on the plane for Sunday morning’s encounter, with the Zebras making nine forced changes to the team that heartbreakingly ran out of troops and lost to Richmond after the siren last week.
VAFA recruits Ben Stephenson and Charlie Rozenes will also debut, while Box Hill signing Andrew Mathieson and Zach Greeves, who played a game for Collingwood in 2023, are the other newcomers.
Important Saints forward Dan Butler (achilles) is a key inclusion, while young tall Levi Young, Elwood Peckett and Sam Latrielle also come into the team.
They replace AFL call-ups Harry Boyd and Hugh Boxshall, while Jack Carroll (hamstring), Misilifi Faimalo (shoulder), Alex Dodson (concussion), Josh Docking (concussion), Will Johnson (shoulder), Zaine Cordy and James Barrat drop out after the bruising RSEA Park encounter that also claimed four Richmond players.
The Giants made two changes, with Lachie Keeffe and James Leake returning from the AFL line-up and Jake Riccardi heading in the other direction.
Footscray regains some quality for its trip down the highway to face Werribee at Avalon Airport Oval, with Luke Cleary returning from concussion, Anthony Scott from a knee injury and Arty Jones from AFL duty. Meanwhile while No.29 draft pick Lachie Jaques has shrugged off a thigh problem to make his VFL debut.
The Tigers made just one change from their win over Essendon, losing important midfielder Jack Riding to general soreness, with Collingwood recruit Jedd Longmire returning to replace him.
Northern Bullants will have two 21-year-old debutants for their third tough away game in a row when they meet Gold Coast at People First Stadium, with Collingwood premiership star Isaac Quaynor’s brother Ben Quaynor and Tasmanian recruit Blade Sulzberger in for their first games alongside Ethan Mantas to replace hamstrung pair Sam Donegan and Amin Naim.
The Suns gain the services of AFL regulars Alex Sexton and Nick Holman alongside Academy debutant Oscar Wood, veteran Zac O’Brien and youngster Jezz Butler, with AFL pair Tom Berry and Cooper Bell injured.
Casey Demons will unveil three high-profile recruits when they take on fellow undefeated team Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Friday.
Cats’ discard Mitch Hardie has overcome a quad injury just in time to return to take on his former club, which surprisingly cut him from its AFL list last season after two dominant seasons at VFL level.
He will be joined in the Demons’ line-up by Jai Culley, who has recovered from a foot injury suffered in the days after he became Melbourne’s last-minute SSP signing in February following an impressive pre-season with Casey after being delisted by West Coast.
Werribee premiership player Aidan Johnson will play his first VFL match since the Grand Final and first for Casey after losing his spot in Melbourne’s team.
The trio will be joined by AFL omissions Jack Billings and Blake Howes and young speedster Ollie Sestan in a star-studded six-pack of inclusions for the Demons.
But the Cats didn’t miss the memo either, recalling club great Mitch Duncan and Oli Wiltshire after they were travelling emergencies to Brisbane last week, while Jhye Clark lost his spot in the AFL team to gun half-forward Shaun Mannagh, while Darcy Edmends will miss a week with a groin injury.
Williamstown returns to DSV Stadium for its first home game of the season desperate to get its campaign underway after giving up three quarter-time leads in the first two games.
But it won’t be easy against a Frankston team coming off a season-opening road win over Port Melbourne.
The Seagulls have bolstered their team with key defender Aidan Bonar and young forward Heath Ollington, but again lost Nick Ebinger to injury for the clash with a Dolphins team they have recorded 21 wins and a draw against in their past 23 encounters.
Frankston has named an unchanged line-up after its win over the Borough, but will definitely want to change its radar after booting 17 consecutive behinds last week.
