DAVID Swallow will be given until late in the week to prove his fitness for Sunday's home game against Fremantle after escaping a serious knee injury.
Gold Coast's co-captain suffered bone bruising and swelling but scans showed no structural damage after a first quarter incident against St Kilda.
Suns coach Stuart Dew said Swallow would be given more time than most to prove his fitness.
"When it comes down to the decision, sometimes you leave those later for guys like your captain," Dew said.
"We'll probably be guided by Dave a fair bit.
"In the end these ones become easy because you set the bar high … and trust the medical staff.
"He'll do what he can, but we'll give him a bit of time and wait and see."
Swallow had the right knee heavily bandaged on Tuesday and said he was relieved with the scan results.
"You never like to miss games but being back at home and in front of the fans, I'll be doing everything I can to make sure I play," Swallow said.
The 26-year-old was injured in the first quarter against the Saints but returned, hobbled, and kicked three goals to almost get his team over the line.
Swallow wasn't the only concern from Sunday's heartbreaking one-point loss, with third-year half-forward Ben Ainsworth set to miss up to six weeks with a medial ligament injury.
Dew said it could have been much worse.
"He probably dodged a bullet when you first looked at it, how bad it could have been," he said.
"When that result came through, although he's going to miss some (time), we were certainly pleased."

"At this stage we're looking at around four to six weeks for Ben's return to play."
Mature defender Sam Collins will also have to pass a concussion test to play his former club at Metricon Stadium.
