The Smithy’s VFL teams for Round 4.

HAWTHORN livewire Jack Ginnivan will make a surprise appearance in the Smithy’s VFL as a host of stars make their comebacks from long-term injuries in Sunday’s mouthwatering clash between Geelong and the Box Hill Hawks at GMHBA Stadium.

Ginnivan has been dropped from the Hawks’ AFL team for the first time since arriving after playing in Collingwood’s 2023 AFL premiership and will make his debut for Box Hill in a selection move sure to draw plenty of eyeballs to the Cattery.

But Box Hill has another two big inclusions, with key defender James Blanck and dangerous forward Sam Butler to play their first matches in more than a year, while the Cats will welcome AFL premiership defender Jake Kolodjashnij back for his first hitout of 2025.

Blanck tore his ACL during a Hawthorn intraclub practice match in February last year and had his return delayed by complications, watching on as the Hawks recruited Tom Barrass and Josh Battle to fill his position, but he will now get his chance to work his way back towards the spot he made his own in 2023.

Butler suffered an horrific broken leg against Sydney at Box Hill City Oval in Round 5 last year and has also missed 12 months, with his return sure to be a feelgood moment for everyone at the Hawks.

Kolodjashnij is a popular and reliable team man in the Geelong defence, with his absence being felt and his return from ongoing groin soreness will put smiles on the faces of everyone at the Cattery.

Perth recruit Joey Chaplin will make his VFL debut for the Cats, who made five forced changes, while defenders Sam Durdin and Seamus Mitchell will return for the Hawks.

Sandringham made an unfathomable 12 changes for its second difficult trip in a row as it faces Footscray at Mission Whitten Oval on Sunday.

The Zebras suffered a crushing 18-goal loss to GWS in Sydney a fortnight ago and first-year coach Brendon Goddard reacted strongly by changing more than half the team as a host of St Kilda reinforcements are deployed.

Ruckman Harry Boyd, top-10 draft pick Tobie Travaglia, talls Isaac Keeler, Max Heath, James Barrat and Alex Dodson all return, as do Hugh Boxshall and Irishman Liam O’Connell, while Wangaratta Rovers youngster Jez Butler will make his debut.

Liam Henry and Arie Schoenmaker were called up by St Kilda, Dan Butler has an achilles injury, Patrick Said, Elwood Peckett and Lachlan Voss are injured and Jet Peckett is unavailable, but five others were dropped.

Footscray will unveil star recruit David Cuningham among a star-studded list of returnees that includes veteran Taylor Duryea, Harvey Gallagher, Oskar Baker, Caleb Poulter and Artie Jones, with Lorne recruit Ted Middleton to play his first VFL game.

Luke Cleary and Cooper Hynes have been called up to the AFL team, while Phoenix Spicer, who will miss a month with a hamstring, are among six Bulldogs to miss from their last game.

Melbourne premiership hero Bayley Fritsch will chase a much-needed return to form when he plays his first Smithy’s VFL game for Casey Demons in seven years when they meet the GWS Giants at Casey Fields on Saturday.

Fritsch, 28, who surged onto the AFL radar with a brilliant 46-goal season in the VFL in 2017, has only played one VFL match since – the 2018 Grand Final loss to Box Hill Hawks when he had 20 disposals playing as a defender before putting together an until now outstanding career at the highest level.

Despite losing promoted Frosty Miller Medal leader Tom Fullarton to a long-awaited Melbourne debut, the Demons have named a powerful attack with Fritsch bringing 154 games and 255 goals of AFL experience, while Jacob van Rooyen has also been dropped by Melbourne for the first time since making his AFL debut last year.

Tall forwards Matt Jefferson and Luker Kentfield return from injury along with lively forward pocket Roy George, while defensive star Judd McVee will also line up for his first hit out of the season, but champion ruckman Tom Campbell will miss with a hamstring injury.

GWS made four changes as Josh Fahey returns from suspension alongside Ryan Angwin, Phoenix Gothard and Sydney recruit James Lugsdin on club debut, with Callum Brown, Harvey Thomas and Toby McMullin promoted.

Sydney has picked up a late bonus with one of the highest profile recruits in the VFL season, signing 199-game AFL star Lachie Hunter this week ahead of a daunting clash with Werribee at Blacktown International Sports Park.

Hunter, 30, who retired from the AFL last year, brings premiership experience at the highest level with the Western Bulldogs and will add class and steel to a Swans team that has been hit by injury and desperately needs to get its season underway before it is too late.

Rookie draftee Blake Leidler will also debut for Sydney, while ruckman Peter Ladhams returns from AFL duty, with in-form defender Aaron Francis being promoted.

New recruits Spencer Johnson and Harry Maguire will debut for the Tigers, who have also regained premiership heroes Angus Hicks and Jack Riding in place of sore youngsters Mace Cousins and Jackson Grundy.

Port Melbourne has recalled Tex Wanganeen to face his former team and named Coburg signing Sam Grant for his club debut when it desperately tries to launch its year against Essendon at ETU Stadium on Saturday night.

The Bombers have included prolific midfielder Matt Foley for his first game of the year along with AFL youngster Elijah Tsatas, while Todd Goldstein and Will Setterfield went to Perth and Angus Clarke has a broken collarbone.

Gold Coast has handed a debut to Academy youngster Cooper Collins on the big stage as it takes on Southport in a mouthwatering Doc Mackenzie Cup Coast Clash at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday.

Collins, 17, a 189cm prospect from the Broadbeach footy factory, comes into the Suns team with fellow Academy teenagers Nelson Beikoff-Smart, Koby Coulson, and Nick Francis and Sandringham Dragons product Miles Enders.

The Sharks made just one change, with dual Grand Finalist Keegan Gray in for former Sun Will Derrington, who will miss two weeks with a hamstring injury.

FORMER Carlton captain Sam Docherty will make his first Smithy’s VFL appearance in 11 years when he lines up for the Blues in their must-win clash against North Melbourne at Arden Street Oval on Good Friday.

Docherty, who was dropped from the AFL team for the SuperClash against the Kangaroos at Marvel Stadium, hasn’t played in the State league since the corresponding round in 2014.

The was when Blues’ reserves players lined up for the Northern Bullants, with Docherty’s only four VFL games coming in the first four rounds of that season.

The Blues have named a strong team to meet the Kangaroos, with ruckman Marc Pittonet returning from injury alongside captain Liam McMahon, with recruit Denver Grainger-Barras to wear the monogram for the first time and Ashton Moir also coming back from the AFL team.

North Melbourne has in turn named Bailey Scott for his first VFL appearance since 2021 as Eddie Ford and Robert Hansen add pace to the forward line.

Park Orchards mature-ager McLaren Spiteri makes his debut, but George Wardlaw and Zane Duursma are in the AFL team and Louis Butler has a hamstring injury.

Both Williamstown and Coburg have named debutants for their important game at DSV Stadium, with the loser falling out of touch with the top 10.

The Seagulls suffered three significant blows, with luckless midfielder James Cousins (knee) and forward Blake Coleman (calf) not given return timelines from injuries, while dour defender Zac Pritchard is unwell.

They have picked Sydney recruit Hamish Morrison and North Melbourne signing Hamish Murphy to wear the yellow sash for the first time, while Yarrawonga product Ned Pendergast will make his VFL debut after developing alongside club greats Michael Gibbons, Willie Wheeler and Leigh Masters.

The Lions have selected Heidelberg’s Jack Andrew for his first VFL game in place of omitted Casey premiership player Ryan Valentine in a bid to break a 17-year win drought against Williamstown.

There are two huge hits for Frankston ahead of its first home game under the Friday night lights at the resurfaced Kinetic Stadium, with in-form midfielder Taj Campbell-Farrell ruled out for six weeks with a back injury and important defender Joe Lloyd to miss up to a month with a foot issue.

The Dolphins have recalled swingman Josh Smith and tough inside-mid Seb Quirk as like-for-like replacements to as they try to beat Richmond for the first time in nine years.

The undefeated Tigers have rung eight changes that should strengthen their line-up.

Hugo Ralphsmith, Maurice Rioli, Samson Ryan and last week’s debutant Jonty Faull are in the AFL team, with their spots taken by Jacob Bauer, Jacob Blight, Liam Fawcett and Mate Colina.

Meanwhile star performers Joel Garner – the hero of the win over Sandringham in Round 2 – Kane McAuliffe, Tyler Sonsie and Kaleb Smith making it eight AFL-listers to come into the team.

Collingwood has brought back Liam Hude to play against his old team Brisbane Lions at Brighton Homes Arena, with the Magpies losing Will Hoskin-Elliott, Mason Cox and Lachie Sullivan to the AFL team over the past two weeks and recruit Brady Grey succumbing to a hamstring problem.

The Lions regain AFL omissions Darcy Fort and Will McLachlan alongside impressive forward Darcy Craven.
