THE WESTERN Bulldogs should be relatively familiar with Carlton by now.

Saturday night's clash at Marvel Stadium will be the second time the sides have met in the past eight weeks, as well as the third time they'd have played in their past 14 games.

The strange quirk in the fixture will give both teams added insight into how they will attack this week's encounter, with fresh perspectives on how they will handle their opposition.

Speaking at the 30th anniversary of the club's 'Fightback' campaign, stopping a proposed merger with Fitzroy, Dogs captain Easton Wood revealed the team has studied the tape this week to ensure a repeat of round five's dismal defeat to the Blues doesn't occur again.

"It's definitely fresher in your mind," Wood told AFL.com.au.

"I don't know if it changes your psyche, but it does give you different focuses from a tactical perspective of what worked and what didn't against them last time.

"We've gone to work on that and hopefully we'll be able to execute well on the weekend."

FULL FIXTURE Every round, every game

Carlton secured an upset 44-point victory when the sides played earlier this season, with Harry McKay dominating to kick four goals from 20 disposals and 11 marks.

However, according to the Dogs, it's the Blues' midfield they're desperate to quell.

Patrick Cripps had 37 disposals and 11 clearances in that round five encounter, while Sam Petrevski-Seton chipped in with 35 disposals and seven clearances, as a total of 10 Carlton players recorded more than 20 touches throughout the game.

"We saw that their midfield really got on top," Wood said.

"They had a really great performance from their inside guys on that day, so obviously we'll need to work to curb their players' influence.

"Hopefully that will balance things up and will give us a good chance to have a win."

The Western Bulldogs are coming off a bye heading into the clash, with the week off giving Luke Beveridge's side a good opportunity to refresh after three consecutive defeats.

"The bye always comes at a good time, no matter what time it comes," Wood said.

"Obviously, having a few losses, it is a challenge. We'd like to be a bit higher than where we currently are, but we've had some really good patches at times.

"Our challenge is to expand that and have a consistent four-quarter effort. We've been talking about that and putting some work in to remedy that.

"Hopefully we can attack the game on the weekend and get that consistent and great performance throughout the four quarters."
