The Smithy’s VFL teams for Round 5.

Gold Coast great David Swallow will line up for his first State league game in nine years when he returns from injury in the Suns’ Smithy’s VFL clash with Sydney at People First Stadium on Sunday.

Swallow, 32, hasn’t played this season due to a knee injury but will line up in the early game for the first time since he made two NEAFL appearances in 2016.

He comes into the Suns’ team alongside AFL omission Sam Clohesy, assistant coach Hugh Greenwood, draftee Cooper Bell and cricket convert Zak Evans to take on a Swans line-up coming off a stirring win over Werribee last week.

But the Swans will be without Logan McDonald with an ankle stress fracture, promoted pair Peter Ladhams and Ben Paton and youngster Oscar Davis, who is out for six weeks with a shoulder injury, while Lachie Hunter misses the trip as well.

Joel Hamling and Angus Hanrahan coming in alongside debutant key forward Tom Ryan, a Swans Academy product from Port Macquarie.

Western Bulldogs veteran Liam Jones will play his first Smithy’s VFL game in eight years when he lines up for Footscray in its huge clash against GWS at Blacktown International Sports Park on Sunday.

Jones hasn’t played at VFL level since he carved up Sandringham with 30 disposals and 15 marks for the Northern Blues in Round 6, 2017, but has lost his AFL spot to the long-awaited debut of impressive young interceptor Jedd Busslinger and will provide a stiff challenge for Giants spearhead Max Gruzewski.

Speedster Harvey Gallagher also returns from AFL duty with draftee Luke Kennedy in concussion protocols.

The Giants have also beefed up their team with Harry Rowston and Callum Brown returning to the line-up that thrashed Casey Demons last week.

Sandringham will enter its clash with the Brisbane Lions at RSEA Park high on confidence after its shock win over Footscray last week and with probably its best team of the season.

The Zebras have been in the news over their alignment with St Kilda in recent days, and Saints trio Jack Carroll, who is back from a hamstring injury suffered in Round 2, and AFL omissions Liam Henry and Arie Schoenmaker also returning, with Isaac Keeler and Angus McLennan being promoted.

The Lions have lost Darcy Fort and Darcy Gardner to AFL duties and ruckman Henry Smith to concussion, but will have Linc McCarthy’s brother Curtis McCarthy making another crack at a debut after a false start last week.

Collingwood young gun Fin Macrae’s hopes of securing a regular spot in the Magpies’ AFL team are on hold after he was ruled out for up to four months with a shoulder injury ahead of their Anzac round clash with Essendon at ETU Stadium on Saturday night.

Macrae has been sent for surgery and is set to miss 12-16 weeks in a significant hit to both himself and the Magpies’ fightback from their disappointing 2024.

Both Collingwood and the Bombers have big inclusions for this game, however, with the Magpies naming big man Mason Cox and Essendon recalling speedster Saad El-Hawli from AFL duties in place of Jayden Laverde, who was suspended for two weeks for headbutting Port Melbourne’s Jimmy Miller last week.

Former Carlton captain Sam Docherty has been named in the VFL again for the Blues after being a late withdrawal for what would have been his first game at the level since 2014 last week.

Docherty, Lachie Cowan and the Lachie Young are in the Blues’ 23 to face Geelong at Ikon Park on Sunday, with Will Hayes a shock omission yet again despite another 37 disposals last week and Denver Grainger-Barras also dropped.

Jake Kolodjashnij will play his first game of the season for the Cats among seven changes, with draftees Xavier Ivisic and Keighton Matofai-Forbes to debut alongside mature-age local league star Brock Williamson, with Darcy Edmends (neck) and the promoted Jhye Clark and Oli Wiltshire among the outs.

Calsher Dear returns from a back problem for his first hitout of the year when Box Hill Hawks welcome Port Melbourne to Wonthaggi for their annual Gippsland sojourn on Sunday, with Changkuoth Jiath, Sam Frost, Finn Maginness and Jasper Scaife to also make the trip.

The Hawks have lost Jack Ginnivan and Henry Hustwaite to Hawthorn and have rested Cal Porter and Trent Bianco, while the Borough made four unforced changes headed by the recalls of Jayden Davey and Archi Manton and a debut for North Ballarat youngster Malachi White.

THE cavalry has arrived for Williamstown ahead of its must-win Anzac Day showdown against Werribee at Avalon Airport Oval on Friday, with star Adelaide Crows recruit Lachie Gollant heading a list of four important inclusions.

The Seagulls and Tigers are both languishing at 1-3 after four rounds, but while the Tigers’ three losses have been by 18, four and two points, the Seagulls have given up three quarter-time leads twice and been belted by Coburg last week as a long injury list took its toll.

But having Gollant, 23, the former Crows key forward who played 16 AFL games and kicked 115 majors in 51 SANFL outings, returning from an oblique injury for his VFL debut, provides another target to take the pressure off Brodie McLaughlin.

Star defender Fin O’Dwyer (adductor) and captain Cam Polson (quad) also return for their first games since Round 1, while lockdown backman Zach Pritchard is in after missing the Coburg thrashing with illness.

On the downside, former AFL defender Aiden Bonar will be missing through injury.

Werribee made one change to the team that lost narrowly to the Swans in Sydney, with Kyabram goalkicker Anthony Depasquale to make his VFL debut in place of Jedd Longmire.

Depasquale has kicked 10 goals in three Goulburn Valley league games for the Bombers after booting 73 in 19 outings last year to earn his call-up.

Talented Richmond half-forward Judson Clarke will become the first of the Tigers’ eight 2024 knee victims to make his comeback when he runs out in the Tigers’ Smithy’s VFL Anzac Eve showdown with Casey Demons at Casey Fields on Thursday.

Clarke, 21, hurt his knee against Werribee in Round 3 last year in the midst of an epidemic of knee victims in the first half of the season, and his return will be keenly felt at the developing club.

Cheltenham’s Sean Lai, the brother of Port Adelaide SSP signing Josh, will make his debut, with Mo Yassine and Nick Guiney returning.

Campbell Gray has earned an AFL debut, Tom Sims is unwell and Joel Garner and Liam George are unavailable for the mid-week fixture.

Casey regains 150-game ruckman Tom Campbell and Melbourne midfielder Blake Howes, while Werribee premiership hero Jack Henderson will play his first game for the club, with Bayley Fritsch and Judd McVee promoted and Mitch Kirkwood-Smith hamstrung.

Frankston and Northern Bullants will both be without key players at Kinetic Stadium on Thursday night.

Star Dolphin recruit Will Hamill is only expected to miss one week with a tight hamstring from last week’s stirring win over Richmond, but Bailey Lambert has been sidelined indefinitely with an ankle injury.

The Bullants have copped a similar whack, with impressive forward-ruck Will Elliott ruled out with concussion among four changes to the team that lost heavily to Gold Coast almost three weeks ago.

The Ants regain Port Melbourne recruit Liam Coghlan, lively pair Rohan McKenzie and Harry Grace and will give a debut to mature-age ruck recruit Lochie Simpson, 23, a 201cm big man from Wodonga Raiders in the Ovens and Murray league.

Frankston will unveil North Melbourne signing Kade De La Rue, while Alec McComb also comes in.
