Former Geelong Falcons goalsneak Gryan Miers was nominated for the NAB AFL Rising Star award following an influential performance inside 50 for Geelong in Round 8.

The 178cm 20-year-old recorded 22 disposals, eight marks and one goal in the Cats’ 24-point win against North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.

Miers was selected by Geelong with pick no.57 at the 2017 NAB AFL Draft after a standout campaign for the Falcons. He booted 50 goals in 17 Victorian U18 Boys games that season, with his haul of seven majors in Geelong’s premiership victory earning him the Grand Final best-on-ground medal. He also represented Vic Country at the 2017 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

The Grovedale Tigers (Geelong FNL) product played 20 Hard Yakka / Totally Workwear VFL games for the Cats last year, where he honed his craft as a dangerous small forward with outstanding goal sense.

Miers made his AFL debut in Round 1 of the 2019 season and has played all eight matches since, averaging 17 disposals and five marks per game as well as kicking 10 goals.

He joins Geelong’s Charlie Constable (ex-Sandringham Dragons), Carlton’s Sam Walsh (Geelong Falcons), West Coast’s Jack Petruccelle (Northern Knights) and Port Adelaide’s Xavier Duursma (Gippsland Power) as former Victorian U18 Boys players to be nominated for the AFL Rising Star award in 2019.
