Adelaide Crows

A couple of veterans were among the chief ball-winners as Crows coach Don Pyke searches for ways to spark his struggling side.

Richard Douglas picked up 27 disposals and Bryce Gibbs had 24, along with a goal, in Adelaide's 26-point loss to North Adelaide.

In attack, Darcy Fogarty (16 disposals and a goal) and Elliott Himmelberg (14 disposals and a goal) are options if Taylor Walker doesn't overcome a hyperextended and sprained right elbow ahead of the club's clash with Carlton.

Dumped forward Tyson Stengle was inaccurate, finishing with 0.4, and ruckman Sam Jacobs won 21 disposals and 28 hitouts, although it was to no avail as North Adelaide was victorious, 12.13 (85) to 7.17 (59).

Brisbane Lions

Young midfielder Corey Lyons pushed his claims for a senior debut with a prolific display against Gold Coast in the NEAFL.

Lyons finished with 42 disposals (22 kicks and 20 handballs), eight marks and 0.2, as Brisbane ran out convincing 79-point winners.

He was among a host of Lions to rack up big numbers, with Nick Robertson (33 disposals), Rhys Mathieson (27) and Ben Keays (26) all finding plenty of the ball.

Young key position prospect Toby Wooller (2.1 and 24 touches) and Lewis Taylor (1.0 and 25 disposals) were impressive up forward.

Carlton

Former Collingwood forward Alex Fasolo is building some consistency in the VFL in his quest for a strong finish to an otherwise disappointing debut season for the Blues. 

The 27-year-old, who has made just three AFL appearances this year, had an equal team-high 20 possessions, took a game-high 10 marks, laid four tackles and kicked a goal in a 21-point loss to Williamstown at home. 

Young defender Angus Schumacher also racked up 20 touches, including a game-high 18 kicks. 

Veteran big man Matthew Lobbe was the Blues' only multiple goalscorer with two, and also had 20 hitouts.

He gave solid support to ruck partner Andrew Phillips, who had 16 possessions and 25 hitouts.

Talented youngsters Ben Silvagni and Liam Stocker both showed good signs in their 15-possessions games.

Collingwood

Big-bodied onballer Rupert Wills issued another reminder of his inside talents during a dominant performance that drove the Magpies to a three-point win in a low-scoring affair at Frankston.

Young pair Brayden Sier and Tyler Brown have gone past Wills in recent times but on Sunday the 26-year-old put his name back in the selection frame by amassing a game-high 32 possessions and eight tackles.

Defender Matt Scharenberg, who was perceived to have been unlucky to be dropped after the round 16 loss to Hawthorn, was also a strong contributor with 22 possessions, nine marks and five tackles. 

Meanwhile, runners Brown (17 and a goal), Tim Broomhead (18 and a goal) and Josh Daicos (16) each had their moments.

Carlton

Fremantle

Midfielder Bailey Banfield continues to rack up big numbers in the WAFL, finishing with 30 disposals, 12 tackles and 2.1 in Peel Thunder's 21-point win over East Fremantle.

Youngster Mitchell Crowden has also kept up his strong recent form, collecting 26 disposals and kicking a goal.

Young tall Hugh Dixon collected 21 touches and won 11 hitouts, while veteran Hayden Ballantyne kicked 1.1. 

Geelong Cats

Gun midfielder Sam Menegola has given Cats coach Chris Scott a selection headache after an impressive return from knee surgery.

In his first game in two months, Menegola collected 26 disposals and laid 11 tackles.

On a Casey Fields surface that was far from pristine, big man Nathan Kreuger was injured, using crutches and sporting ice on his left knee after the match, while young backman Zach Guthrie appeared to suffer a right leg issue.

Quinton Narkle won 30 disposals and booted 2.4, while onballer Charlie Constable had 29.

Veteran Scott Selwood finished with 15 disposals and bagged two goals to help Geelong post a 5.18 (48) to 5.9 (39) win.

Gold Coast Suns

Midfielder George Horlin-Smith was a rare shining light for the Suns during their 79-point loss to Brisbane in the NEAFL, collecting 24 disposals and laying five tackles.

Big man Tom Nicholls was the dominant ruckman on the ground, finishing with 51 hitouts and 20 disposals.

Rookie Brad Scheer found plenty the ball (22 touches), while Sam Fletcher (one goal) was one of only two goalkickers for the Suns.

Another rookie Jack Leslie took a team-high 10 marks to go along with 15 disposals.

GWS Giants

This weekend: GWS Giants v Aspley - Saturday, July 20, 12.55pm, Giants Stadium

First-round draftee Jackson Hately topped the stats sheet for the Giants in their 64-point loss to Aspley on Saturday afternoon.

Hately collected 29 disposals and laid nine tackles while Nick Shipley picked up 25 and booted a goal.

Dropped defender Adam Kennedy was hospitalised after being diagnosed with an elevated heart rate.

He reported being ill during the half-time break.

Kennedy had collected 18 disposals to that point, while fellow dumped backman Matt Buntine finished with three.

Aspley booted seven goals in the final term to run away with the 16.18 (114) to 7.8 (50) victory.

Hawthorn

Teenage draftee Mat Walker enjoyed a breakout performance in a 14-point home loss to Richmond.

The 19-year-old, who was the No.63 pick in last year's NAB AFL Draft, bagged a game-high five goals, easily beating his previous best haul of two, which he'd achieved three times.

The Hawks were well served in the ruck by Jonathon Ceglar (20 touches, eight marks and 26 hitouts) and Marc Pittonet (14 touches, seven marks, 21 hitouts and 1.2).

They provided great service to the likes of Teia Miles, who produced a season-best 30 possessions, including a game-high 26 kicks, and kicked a goal, and James Cousins, who had 27 touches and also kicked a goal.

Veteran Jarryd Roughead was scoreless from 13 disposals.

Seasoned defender David Mirra, in his 150th game for Box Hill, was typically difficult to pass with 22 disposals and 13 marks, as was Conor Glass (21).

Young forward Jackson Ross contributed two goals.

Melbourne

Small forward Jay Kennedy Harris was among Casey's best during its nine-point loss to Geelong on Saturday, finishing with 20 disposals, 11 tackles and a goal.

Rookie Tim Smith was similarly ferocious with 11 tackles, 14 touches and a goal, while youngster Oskar Baker collected 19 disposals.

Forwards Charlie Spargo (15 disposals) and Mitch Hannan (12 disposals and 0.1) were both unable to make a strong impact on the scoreboard.

North Melbourne

Majak Daw made further strides in his bid to return to AFL level by seasons's end.

In his third VFL game on the comeback trail, Daw played predominantly in defence but also spent time in the ruck, finishing with 10 possessions, five marks, four tackles and 11 hitouts.

He provided a breather for ruckman Tom Campbell, who was superb with 25 disposals, seven marks, four tackles and 38 hit-outs, guiding the Kangaroos to a last-gasp three-point victory after they trailed by 52 points at quarter-time after kicking against a strong wind. 

Promising midfielder Luke Davies-Uniacke was again solid with 25 touches and a long-range goal. 

Medium-sized rookie forward Lachlan Hosie snared three goals and experienced runner Sam Wright had 19 touches and kicked a goal.

Port Adelaide

Youngster Willem Drew stood out on a dirty day for Port Adelaide's SANFL side, with the midfielder collecting 30 disposals and laying seven tackles during a disappointing 24-point loss to Glenelg.

The Magpies were held goalless by the competition leaders in the opening half and only managed their opening goal of the match early in the third term when young tall Sam Hayes booted the first of his two majors.

Experienced ruckman Paddy Ryder managed 15 disposals, 24 hitouts and a goal, while former Sun Trent McKenzie (27 touches) and veteran midfielder Jack Trengove (23) won plenty of the ball.

Richmond

Tigers premiership heroes Toby Nankervis and Josh Caddy appear primed to return for the big clash with Collingwood at the MCG on Friday after impressive showings in a 14-point win in the VFL.

Nankervis, in his first game since suffering a high-grade adductor injury in the round eight win over against Fremantle, had eight possessions, 13 hitouts and kicked a goal in a half at Box Hill on Sunday.

The combative 24-year-old would be a welcome addition to a Richmond side that will need to find a counter for the Magpies' gun ruckman Brodie Grundy.

Caddy, in his third VFL match after returning from a leg injury, had 18 touches and took six marks, also in limited game time just five days before the encounter with the Pies.

Another to shine at Box Hill was first-year player Patrick Naish, who had a team-high 31 possessions, including 22 kicks. He also took nine marks and kicked a goal.

Versatile Oleg Markov bagged four goals and dished off another to youngster Callum Coleman-Jones for the match-sealing major.

Rookie-listed runner Derek Eggmolesse-Smith responded well to his senior demotion with 26 touches, nine marks and five tackles.

Dan Butler and Connor Menadue each kicked two goals.

St Kilda

St Kilda star Jack Steven made a positive comeback in the VFL, increasing hopes that he will make a speedy return to AFL level.

The four-time club champion, who hadn't played in almost three months as he focused on his mental health, gathered 21 possessions from three quarters in a midfield/forward role in a 37-point loss to Footscray.

Steven, 29, enjoyed a 10-possession third term before sitting out the last quarter.

Defender Brandon White had a game-high 31 disposals, including 25 kicks, and took 10 marks in a prolific display.

The versatile Bailey Rice collected 27 touches, including 20 kicks, and laid four tackles.

Midfielder Ed Phillips again had 21 possessions, while the aggressive Jonathon Marsh had 15 touches, took eight marks and kicked a goal.

Veteran onballer David Armitage managed just 14 touches.

Father-son prospect Rhylee West continues to strengthen his case for a late season AFL debut.

West, 19, was instrumental in Footscray's 37-point win over Sandringham on Sunday, accumulating a team-high 24 possessions and an equal team-high five tackles.

In his past eight VFL outings the midfielder has averaged 22 disposals and six tackles.

Another untried Bulldogs midfielder in Callum Porter was also prominent with 20 disposals and five tackles.

Premiership defender Fletcher Roberts had a season-high 21 touches and eight marks.

Bailey Williams, who was dropped from the AFL side, had 19 possessions, while Billy Gowers had 14 touches and scored 2.1 in his second VFL game since returning from an ankle injury.
