A MAN is expected to be charged with assault after an incident involving supporters from rival clubs at the MCG on Saturday.
As spectators left the stadium after Melbourne's five-point win over Hawthorn, disturbing footage was captured showing a tattooed, shaven-headed man in a Demons guernsey approaching an apparently younger man in a Hawks jumper and punching him before throwing him to the ground.
"He's disabled, you _____ idiot!" someone screams at the offender.
A statement from Victoria Police confirmed that a 34-year-old man from Baxter had been interviewed over the incident and was expected to be charged with assault-related offences.
However, police revealed they were still to identify the victim, who left the venue before police arrived on the scene.
The Demons took a dim view of the incident.
"The Melbourne Football Club is aware of an incident that occurred following the Melbourne vs Hawthorn match on Saturday afternoon at the MCG," the club said in a statement.
"The club is appalled by this behaviour and vehemently condemns violence of any kind.
It is important to our club and the AFL community that all patrons feel safe. Violence has no place in the community, let alone at a sporting event.
"The club is working with all relevant parties involved to gather further information, and to determine the appropriate action required. As the matter is currently being investigated by Victoria Police, the club isn't in a position to make any further comment."
