About the position

The Club is seeking a Player Development Coordinator to join their Women’s Football program.

Reporting to the General Manager – Women’s Football, the Player Development Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating an elite level off field development program to support, develop and guide AFLW/VFLW players at the Carlton Football Club.

This includes, but not limited to, the management of the wellbeing services as well as the organisation and management of the education and special interest programs for the Carlton AFLW/VFLW playing group.

Furthermore, the successful candidate will be able to work well under pressure with tight timeframes and is to ensure a positive and supportive environment for all the players throughout their football careers at Carlton.

The Player Development Coordinator may be required to work outside of standard business hours including evenings and weekends as required. A competitive remuneration package will be offered for the right candidate and commensurate with relevant skills and experience.

Key responsibilities for the Player Development Coordinator

The key responsibilities for this role are, but not limited to:

Player Welfare

  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with the playing group, player families/partners and other key stakeholders.
  • Liaise with key internal stakeholders regarding player welfare, subject to confidentiality issues.
  • Assist and help players with day to day life management, with a view to encouraging practical self -sufficiency and independence.
  • Identify situations requiring external support and access appropriate resources i.e. AFLPA psychology service managers.
  • Act as the conduit between the player and external support for optimal player health and wellbeing.
  • Attend AFLW/VFLW training and matches as required

Coordinate Player Development and Resources

  • Identify, support and assist with player educational and employment needs
  • Plan and implement a player development program which responds to individual needs and proactively develops core skills and attributes.
  • Utilise AFLPA Player Development resources effectively.
  • Ensure that each player’s needs are individually monitor and recorded at regular intervals.

Player Engagement and Life Skills

  • Help and assist the players to identify and pursue personal interests and off-field experiences.
  • Refer players to employers and the Carlton Football Club network who can offer flexible part-time/full-time work or work experience in areas of interest.
  • Implement and manage a special interest program allowing players greater off-field enjoyment and opportunity.
  • Assist with coordinating service providers to educate/train players specific to their requirements.
  • Manage the preparation and presentation of the parent induction and parents /partners events.

Transition Services

  • Manage CFC induction program for new players, ensuring all new players are briefed on club expectations, routines, protocols, history and resources available.
  • Assist with the relocation of interstate/international listed players.
  • Assist players to review their options after delisting and assist with any follow up action plan as required.

Regular Reporting and Review

  • Ensure that each player’s needs are individually reviewed at regular intervals.
  • Subject to confidentiality issues, ensure that relevant club officials are informed in a timely manner about issues affecting player’s health and wellbeing and football career.
  • Review all player development practices regularly to develop best practice.
  • Maintain appropriate and accurate records.

About you

Qualifications, knowledge and skills

Essential:

  • Tertiary qualifications in teaching, psychology, counseling or sports management
  • Extensive experience in the sports industry and/or a similar role
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Ability to work with information of a confidential and sensitive nature and manage this appropriately
  • An understanding of AFL football and the demands it places on its athletes
  • High level organisational, administrative and project management skills
  • Ability to build and maintain meaningful relationships with a variety stakeholders
  • Felxibility to work outside of standard business hours including evenings and weekends
  • Values driven, with demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and within a team

Desirable:

  • An understanding of AFLPA development program services
  • An understanding of the education and apprenticeship system
  • Experience working with athletes
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to cultural needs of individuals
