MELBOURNE has adopted the motto of 'fugazi' made famous in the Hollywood blockbuster The Wolf Of Wall Street to shut out the hype surrounding the club after five straight victories.
Fugazi, which means 'noise' or 'fake', is a line Mark Hanna, played by actor Matthew McConaughey, drops in the Academy Award-winning film when in conversation with lead character and Wall Street stockbroker Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio).
"What we're focused in on is our weeks and our preparation and really respecting that. Obviously there is a lot of noise out there and I think that's great for our supporters for what they're starting to see," Goodwin said.
"Internally, it's 'fugazi' which means it's noise. We need to actually focus on what we can control which is respecting the game and understanding our weeks and really driving that mentality."
Goodwin completed the press conference by giving his best impression of McConaughey's famous speech.
"It goes something like it's fugazi, it's a whazy, it's a woozie," Goodwin quoted with a laugh.
Goodwin said his team, which sits third on the AFL ladder, was starting to deal better with the expectation placed on the club.
"It's part of maturing. It's valuing every contest, within a game. It's valuing every (training) session. That doesn't just happen," Goodwin said.
"Expectation is going to come, and we welcome that expectation. It's then how you deal with it and it's how you actually focus on what's really important to you as a footy club."
The Demons coach said it would be foolhardy to start discussing the club's finals chance, let alone premiership hopes.
"We need to be really clear with where we sit. It's round 10, there's so much footy to be played and we've just got to focus on what is right in front of us right now," Goodwin said.
"This game is a game of small margins. You can be in good form and you can be out of good form.
"We're not looking ahead of this week against the Western Bulldogs."
Melbourne will go in unchanged for the second-straight week in co-captain Nathan Jones' 250th AFL match.
Goodwin said it was a major factor behind the club's consistent performances across the last month.
"It's something we haven't had for a number of years through both form and fitness," Goodwin said.
"That cohesion is something that's really important in understanding your role in teams and understanding what players are capable of and just playing together for a period of time."
