STEVEN May has fired the first cheeky shot at Gary Ablett as the dual Brownlow medallist prepares to play at Metricon Stadium for the first time since leaving the Suns in the off-season.

After seven years with Gold Coast, Ablett sought a trade back to Geelong last October, and this weekend will see him square off against his former teammates for the first time.

Asked on Tuesday whether he would relish taking on Ablett if the champion midfielder spent time forward, May had a quick retort.

"I'd love to play on Gaz for a bit, but Dangerfield is probably more dangerous at the moment," May said.

"He won't like that, Gaz, hearing that.

"Gaz used to always joke at training that he'd love to have me in the goalsquare one-on-one.

"It could happen this week. We'll see, it should be a bit of fun."

May is having a strong season, playing on a mix of forwards as Rory Thompson strings together his most consistent football in years.

The Gold Coast co-captain took Port Adelaide superstar Robbie Gray when they met in China prior to the bye, and said he enjoyed the different challenges of talls and smalls.

"I don't know if I'll be employed as a spare, as an offensive player one week or am I locking down on a dangerous type, or is there two big talls and I need to play on one of them," he said.

"I think it's exciting."

Gold Coast will be buoyed by the return of May's fellow co-captain Tom Lynch, who declared his fitness to take on the Cats after missing the past three matches with a knee injury.

Sam Day will also return from suspension and Jack Martin from illness.
