THE best player in each Western Derby will now take home the 'Glendinning-Allan Medal' after West Coast and Fremantle finally came to an agreement on the name of the award.

The medal's name now acknowledges the first captains of both clubs, Ross Glendinning of West Coast and Ben Allan of Fremantle, and ends the bitter dispute between the arch-rivals.

Both clubs had been locked in an unpleasant disagreement about the medal's prior name, the 'Ross Glendinning Medal', in the lead-up to their clash in April this year.

The Dockers had even threatened to not award the medal to the best player in that match, with CEO Steve Rosich claiming it didn't represent both clubs fairly.

Glendinning had served as Fremantle's chairman of selectors, but was best known for his role as West Coast's inaugural captain.

"Whilst we acknowledge Ross Glendinning as a great West Australian player and Brownlow medallist, he is the first captain of West Coast and a current and visible employee and brand ambassador of our derby opponents," Rosich said.

However, the best player in Western derbies will now vie for the 'Glendinning-Allan Medal', after both sides agreed on the medal's name change prior to their round 20 encounter.

“The WAFC believes that this is a fair and appropriate outcome for both clubs that recognises their inaugural captains and continues to uphold the tradition of presenting a medal to the best player in each Western Derby,” WAFC chairman Murray McHenry said.

Glendinning will award the medal to the best player in all West Coast home derbies, while Allan will present the award after all Fremantle home derbies.

The medal was first presented in 2001, though 12 retrospective winners of the award – dating back to 1995 – will be on hand to collect 'Glendinning-Allan Medals' at Optus Stadium prior to West Coast's clash with Fremantle next week.
