SHAUN Burgoyne and Hawthorn face an anxious wait for the diagnosis on the star's latest hamstring injury.

Monday's scan results will not only be important ahead of its massive clash with GWS, but also for Burgoyne's football future.

The four-time premiership player is 35 and Saturday's win over Gold Coast in Launceston was his 351st game.

He suffered the first hamstring injury of his career in round two and missed the next three games.

Burgoyne has been durable, playing more than 20 games per season for the past seven years.

But soft-tissue injuries are the bane of players in their 30s.

Speaking before Burgoyne's 350th last week, he and coach Alastair Clarkson were upbeat about him playing on next season.

But Burgoyne said it is also a matter of how well his body holds up.

Burgoyne felt something was wrong early in the third term on Saturday and came off for the rest of the game.

"I'm not too sure at the moment – it's a severe case of cramp or a strain," he told the ABC.

"I will obviously get scans tomorrow ... it would be pretty embarrassing if it was a cramp.

"There was a bit of precaution there as well."

Burgoyne said on Sunday that the hamstring is sore and it has had plenty of ice treatment since the incident.

"It was a bit awkward and it's never happened before," he said.

"When it happened again, I wasn't quite sure if it was a severe case of cramp or a strain, so I came off.

"Fingers crossed – if there is something there, it's small."

He said all his injuries before this season had involved broken bones.

"I don't want to keep repeating them," he said of this season's hamstring problems.
