MELBOURNE youngster Charlie Spargo's bid to make his AFL debut this season has been delayed by at least one week after he accepted a one-game ban for striking in the VFL on Sunday.

Spargo, pick No.29 in last year's NAB AFL Draft, was reported for striking Coburg's Nick Mellington in the first quarter of the Casey Demons' 107-point win over the Lions.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct with low impact and high contact and was classified as a two-match base sanction by the VFL's match review panel. 

Spargo and the Demons had the option of accepting a one-match ban with an early guilty plea, which they did on Tuesday morning.

After shaking off a shoulder complaint, Spargo impressed in the latter half of the pre-season with his tenacity around the ball and his speed across half-forward, and would be in contention for a senior debut this season. 

Spargo arrived at the club after having a shoulder reconstruction in June last year. 

He is the son of former North Melbourne midfielder Paul, who played 90 games with the club between 1985 and 1992.

Paul also played nine games for the Brisbane Bears in 1993.
