DISCARDED Gold Coast Sun and former Fremantle Docker Michael Barlow says he wants to lighten the load on Patrick Cripps at Carlton.

While realistic about his chances of being picked up, Barlow, 31, said he'd love the chance to help guide the young Blues midfield.

Barlow said there hasn't been much interest in his services at this stage, but identified Carlton as a side where he would be able to make an impact.

"I do look at the Patrick Cripps situation at Carlton and see myself really being able to help there and decrease the load on certain players," Barlow told NAB AFL Trade Radio.

"It's as brutal a game as there is in the world. On those younger bodies… it can wear them down.

"I'd love to help him (Cripps) if the opportunity arises."

Barlow managed just three senior appearances in 2018 and said he was frustrated at his lack of game time for the Suns.

But the ball-magnet insisted he still has plenty to offer at AFL level.

In round 23 against Geelong, Barlow racked up 35 disposals despite his side losing by 102 points.

"The fire really burns for me and until that flame goes out… I'll be doing everything I can to get that opportunity," Barlow said.

"What I would bring to a football club at this stage of my career would be proven performances over a long period, really high standards and leadership."

Barlow was delisted in August by Gold Coast after 15 games in two seasons, following 126 games with Fremantle.
