LIGHTNING does strike twice.

From the same spot that Luke Shuey ended Port Adelaide's season almost 12 months ago, Jeremy McGovern sent a dagger through Power hearts with his own match-winning kick after the siren.

Pushed forward in the last quarter, the All Australian defender took a contested mark from ruckman Scott Lycett's centre-square clearance with less than 30 seconds on the clock.

He kicked truly as the siren sounded as the Eagles stole a game they never looked like winning, taking victory 9.8 (62) to 9.4 (58) on Saturday.

The crowd of 32,534 was stunned as the Eagles extended their unbeaten run at Adelaide Oval over the Power at Adelaide to five games – including last year's epic elimination final that Shuey won off his boot in extra-time.

McGovern's match-winning goal was the first time the Eagles led all game.

They trailed by 10 points with less than a minute on the clock before Mark LeCras kicked a goal with 45 seconds left to give them a sniff.

The Eagles (15-5) remain second on the ladder and are eight points clear of third-placed Hawthorn with two games remaining.

The pulsating finish caps a tumultuous week for the Eagles after the eight-match suspension of star midfielder Andrew Gaff.

"It was a big week for the club," Eagles coach Adam Simpson said.

"To lose Andrew like we did, and it was a six-day break (after the Fremantle game), so a part of me thought it was good to get away.

"Took us right to the line to move on from it."

Luke Shuey (31 disposals) and Elliot Yeo (25) were outstanding in Gaff's absence, LeCras was busy with 24 and Lycett was dominant.

It's a huge blow for the Power (12-8), who are in danger of slipping out of the top eight and face Collingwood and Essendon in the run home.

"It's incredibly disappointing," Power coach Ken Hinkley said.

"As a footy club, that happens and you deal with it.

"We've worked really hard this year to get where we are. The last couple of weeks have hurt, but won't kill us, we'll keep coming.

"We'll attack the next two weeks."

The Power played the last quarter with 19 fit players.

Star ruckman Paddy Ryder left the game with a re-occurrence of a hip flexor injury, half-back flanker Dan Houston was taken off in a medicab after a strong collision with Eagles midfielder Brendon Ah Chee and key forward Charlie Dixon hobbled off with an ankle injury.

The Eagles sensed their opportunity.

After kicking just four goals in the first half and 20 minutes into the third term, their attack came to life.

It was anyone's game at three-quarter time with the Power clinging to a 15-point lead.

Eagles high flyer Liam Ryan delivered a mark of the year contender with a brilliant hanger before converting his set shot to narrow the deficit to 10 points.

The Eagles kicked three behinds and Power star Robbie Gray missed a set shot from 45 metres.

Fatigue set in for the Power as the Eagles booted 3.3 (21) to 0.2 (2) in the final term.

The Power controlled the first half.

They led by 25 points after just 23 minutes, and by 28 points after Paddy Ryder's goal 10 minutes into the third quarter.

MEDICAL ROOM

Port Adelaide: It was a horror night for the Power as they finished with 19 fit players. The worst is key forward Charlie Dixon, who is out for the rest of the season with a serious ankle injury. "Dixon won't play again this year, he's got a badly sprained, possibly broken ankle," Power coach Ken Hinkley said. Dixon hit the ground awkwardly in a marking contest with Tom Barrass in the third quarter. Star ruckman Paddy Ryder left the game in the third quarter with a re-occurrence of his hip flexor injury. "Ryder, aggravated hip flexor, he's still some chance (for next week's game) because we took the cautious approach where we're at in the season," Hinkley said. Defender Dan Houston was taken off in a medicab after a heavy collision with Brendon Ah Chee in the third quarter. "He's had some precautionary X-rays and stuff, but I think he'll be fine," Hinkley said.

West Coast: Nathan Vardy and Liam Ryan collided early in the second term. Vardy had his left knee looked at by the medical staff. Ryan was helped off the ground with a cork to his right thigh, but returned to play and took a mark of the year contender in the last quarter. Vardy went back on the ground to start the third term and finished the game.

The Eagles have an eight-day break before another huge challenge when they host Melbourne at Optus Stadium next Sunday. The injury-depleted Power will be outsiders to beat Collingwood at the MCG next Saturday. However, the Power have won their past four against the Magpies.
