FREMANTLE list boss Brad Lloyd will join Carlton as its new head of football.

AFL.com.au has confirmed Lloyd, who has been with the Dockers since 2008, will replace outgoing football chief Andrew McKay ahead of the 2019 season.

The two clubs continue to work through what Lloyd's departure date will be, however it is understood he will part ways with the Blues before the NAB AFL Trade Period.

During his 11-year tenure with the Dockers, which included time as national recruiting manager, Lloyd was predominantly based in Melbourne. 

"I want to thank CEO Steve Rosich and president Dale Alcock for the investment and education they have provided me as a person and an employee," Lloyd said.

"The club has a strong and talented board, which is setting the club up for future success.

"I would also like to thank senior coach Ross Lyon and general manager of football operations Chris Bond for their guidance and friendship plus the recruiting team, led by David Walls, and the broader football staff group."

CEO Steve Rosich said Lloyd's departure will provide the opportunity for the club to review its list management team.

"Brad has made a significant contribution to Fremantle during his 11 seasons at the club," Rosich said.

"During the past two years Brad has played an important role in the club's rebuild, including the arrival of 22 new players at Fremantle in that time and our eight debutants in 2018," Rosich said.

"The club now has the opportunity to consider a new structure that best suits the future resourcing of our football operations and which continues to drive our list rebuild and a return to playing consistent finals football."

Lloyd also served as an AFL player agent with Elite Sports Properties (now TLA Worldwide) from 2001-2008. 

Brad is the brother of Essendon champion Matthew and current Geelong head of football Simon. 

Their father John played 29 games for Carlton from 1965-1967.
