FORGET father-son connections, Collingwood's 'grandfather-son' selection at the NAB AFL Draft on Friday is destined to excite the black and white army.
Drafted to the Pies with pick No.77, Oakleigh Charger Atu Bosenavulagi is the 'grandson' of Collingwood cheer squad leader Jeff 'Joffa' Corfe.
Joffa is married to Bosenavulagi's grandma's sister. But to Bosenavulagi, Joffa is more than just a great uncle, he refers to him as "grandpa".
A FAMILIAR NAME Father-son defender lands at Pies
Standing at 180cm and 81kg, Bosenavulagi thrives as a pressure small forward who can hit the scoreboard, while he oozes X-factor.
"Atu is a really good story, real credit to the guys and girls down at Oakleigh (Chargers)," Collingwood list manager Ned Guy said on Friday.
"His development this year has been through the roof.
"Fijian background, really quick, really tough, rugby background, tackles really well.
"We’ll see him coming in and developing as a small forward for us."
Collingwood had access to the Fijian-born prospect through its Next Generation Academy, similarly to utility Isaac Quaynor, who the Pies secured with pick No.13.
The rugby union convert's form progressed throughout the TAC Cup and gauged the interest of club scouts with his pace, hardness and tackling, particularly during the final month of the season where he averaged 17 disposals and four tackles.
Despite numerous attempts from the golden jacket-wearing Joffa to disseminate his eternal love for the Pies, Bosenavulagi remained faithful to the Western Bulldogs.
Perhaps, until now.
