KURT Tippett's failed to make much of an impact in Sydney's surprise three-point loss to the Brisbane Lions in the NEAFL Grand Final at the SCG on Saturday night, harming his chances of a recall for next week's semi-final against Geelong.
Tippett wasn't at full capacity in the final term, playing with his left knee heavily strapped. He continued to perform the rucking duties, which he had dominated throughout the match, but his influence beyond the stoppages was minimal.
Tippett had 15 touches, took three marks and laid two tackles. In the second quarter, he took a strong contested mark, holding the ball on the second grab, but missed the set shot from 30 metres slightly to the left of goal.
It may not be enough for Tippett to feature in the finals for the senior side. Coach John Longmire said after his side's big win over Essendon that Tippett wasn't considered for the elimination final because the coaching staff weren't sure he would get through the game.
Sam Naismith was recalled and Callum Sinclair took his opportunity with three goals in a fine performance. Dean Towers provided a surprise helping hand in the ruck.
The NEAFL side needed Tippett to stand up. The Swans held a four-point lead at quarter-time but, at the end of a see-sawing second term, they trailed 6.7 (43) to 5.10 (40).
The Lions opened up a 28-point lead midway through the third quarter and took a 20-point lead at three-quarter-time, 75 to 55.
Sydney came home strongly. But just when it looked like they would over-run the outsiders, Brisbane rallied to secure the win. Ben Keays was outstanding for Brisbane, with 30 disposals and two goals.
