WESTERN Bulldogs captain Katie Brennan is battling an ankle injury to be ready for her club’s NAB AFL Women’s opener against Fremantle on Saturday night.
Brennan declared she would be right to lead the Dogs on to the Whitten Oval, despite wearing a moonboot to protect the ankle last week and early this week.
"It's a little bit tender, but I'll be right," she said after Wednesday’s captains' call at Arden Street Oval.
The power forward was taken straight off the ground after a mishap during a practice match against Collingwood at Olympic Park Oval last Friday week.
"It was just a little roll of the ankle," Brennan said.
"When you get to an elite competition like this, they wrap you in cotton wool a little bit. The X-ray was all clear and the (medical) scans have come back fine, so it was just precautionary.
"I came off the ground because it was only a practice match and we rested it to make sure I'm ready for round one."
Brennan was predictably coy about the injury when asked which ankle needed treatment before the first round.
"I don't think I can tell you that," she said with a grin.
The Bulldogs will train Wednesday night and the team will be announced after the final workout on Thursday night.
The Brisbane Lions have adopted a wait-and-see attitude on whether star forward Tayla Harris can play against Melbourne at Casey Fields in Cranbourne on Sunday afternoon.
Harris has been wearing a sling on the right arm after injuring the shoulder in a gym mishap.
Lions captain Emma Zielke said a decision on Harris would be made in the next 48 hours.
"She's going to have her final fitness test either today (Wednesday) or tomorrow (Thursday) and we'll see how she pulls up from that," Zielke said.
"Having her in the side will be a massive 'in' for us, so our fingers are crossed."
So, does the skipper expect Harris to run out with the team?
"I live with her, so I get the inside ‘goss’ every day. I think she'll get up for it and she'll be a vital part of our game-plan."
