The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed the matches played in round seven of the 2017 Toyota AFL Premiership Season. The following charges were laid:

Jack Steven, St Kilda, has been charged with engaging in misconduct against Stephen Coniglio, GWS Giants, during the first quarter of the Round Seven match between St Kilda and the GWS Giants, played at Etihad Stadium on Friday May 5, 2017.

In summary, he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

A first offence for misconduct was classified as a $1500 sanction. The player has no applicable record with impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a $1000 sanction. 

Koby Stevens, St Kilda, has been charged with engaging in rough conduct against Nathan Wilson, GWS Giants, during the second quarter of the Round Seven match between St Kilda and the GWS Giants, played at Etihad Stadium on Friday May 5, 2017.

In summary, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea. 

Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the GWS Giants Football Club, the incident was assessed as careless conduct with medium impact to the head. The incident was classified as a two-match sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a one-match sanction.

Charlie Cameron, Adelaide Crows, has been charged with striking Kayne Turner, North Melbourne, during the first quarter of the Round Seven match between the Adelaide Crows and North Melbourne, played at Blundstone Arena on Saturday May 6, 2017.

In summary, he can accept a $1500 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the North Melbourne Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct with low impact to the body. The incident was a second classifiable offence and therefore was classified as a $2500 sanction. An early plea enables the player to accept a $1500 sanction. 

Jarrad Waite, North Melbourne, has been charged with engaging in rough conduct against Tom Lynch, Adelaide Crows, during the second quarter of the Round Seven match between North Melbourne and the Adelaide Crows, played at Blundstone Arena on Saturday May 6, 2017. 

In summary, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the Adelaide Crows Football Club, the incident was assessed as careless conduct with medium impact to the head. The incident was classified as a two-match sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept one-match sanction.

Matt Taberner, Fremantle, has been charged with striking Michael Hurley, Essendon, during the first quarter of the Round Seven match between Fremantle and Essendon, played at Domain Stadium on Sunday May 7, 2017.

In summary, he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the Essendon Football Club, the incident was assessed as careless conduct with low impact to the groin. The incident was classified as a $15000 sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a $1000 sanction.

Other incidents assessed

Contact between the Adelaide Crows’ Brad Crouch and North Melbourne’s Shaun Atley from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The ball is bounced in the centre and Atley takes possession, when he is tackled by Crouch. Crouch takes Atley to ground and a free kick is paid to the North Melbourne player for a dangerous tackle action. It was the view of the panel there was no significant contact for Atley’s head to the ground, with primary contact being to his shoulder in the tackle and that the free kick at the time addressed the incident. No further action was taken.

Contact between the Sydney Swans’ Callum Mills and the Brisbane Lions’ Jarrod Berry from the second quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Berry was preparing to take a mark with Mills coming to the contest and seeking to spoil the ball. Mills has his arm straight for the spoil attempt and does not use a swinging arm action when high contact is made. A 50-metre penalty was paid at the time for the high contact. It was the view of the panel that Mills was making a legitimate attempt to spoil and no further action was required.

Contact between the Sydney Swans’ Lance Franklin and the Brisbane Lions’ Nick Robertson from the third quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel that the force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.
