YOUNG Fremantle defender Luke Ryan has extended his contract at the club by another two years.

The deal will see the 2017 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee in Dockers colours until at least the end of the 2020 season, adding to an existing year he already had.

Ryan said he was excited to see how the young Fremantle core could develop in the next three years.

"We’re all quite young and playing together, so, hopefully, we’ll stick with each other for a few more years," he said.

"I can’t wait to see how we go this year and in the years to come."

Ryan played 11 games in his first season, and shot to prominence with his round 20 performance against Gold Coast, where he took nine intercept marks – just one shy of the AFL record.

The half-back was a star in Peel's WAFL final series, winning the Simpson Medal as best on ground in the Grand Final against Subiaco.

Ryan joins number No.2 draft pick Andrew Brayshaw in signing a contract extension with the club this week, with the young midfielder extending his original two-year deal through to the end of the 2021 season.

General manager of list management Brad Lloyd said Ryan had settled in well and was a great defensive fit alongside the likes of Joel Hamling, Connor Blakely, Ethan Hughes, Griffin Logue and ex-Giant Nathan Wilson.

"He reads the ball well, he’s a smart player, he’s good overhead, he’s courageous and he uses the ball really well off half-back," Lloyd said.

"He’s come back to the club in really good shape and he’s run well. He’s in the early stages of pre-season and we feel like he’s setting himself up well."
