THE BRISBANE Lions have had a boost on the eve of Christmas, with prized No.3 draft pick Hugh McCluggage inking a three-year contract extension with the club.
The deal means the Lions have locked in the midfielder, who played 18 games in his debut season last year, until at least the end of 2021.
"I'm really excited to stay here for another three years and see what we can do," McCluggage said.
"I like where the club is heading and the direction we are heading in."
It is a significant signing for the Lions, who have battled retention issues in the past but see the smooth and skillful McCluggage as a key part of their future.
The 19-year-old looked comfortable at the top level last season but will benefit from another pre-season at the club, where he's likely to add more size to his frame.
He pieced together a stunning under-18 season in 2016 to push into the top rungs of the NAB AFL Draft, and won a Rising Star nomination last year.
"I think it's great news that Hugh's agreed to sign on for another three years at the club," Lions coach Chris Fagan said.
"He made a fantastic start to his career last year, playing a lot of senior footy. There's a lot more of that ahead for him.
"He looks a lot stronger and fitter than he was last year and for him to show that amount of faith in the club, says a lot about where we are going to and where he thinks we’re headed.
"He, along with a lot of the other young men, are really excited about our prospects. They’re here for the long haul."
The Lions' attention will turn to re-signing impressive half-back Alex Witherden, who is an early favourite to take out next year's Rising Star award after a brilliant end to his 2017 season after overcoming a broken leg.
Brisbane, with new recruits Luke Hodge, Charlie Cameron and No.1 pick Cam Rayner, has been training in Tasmania ahead of its Christmas break.
