FREMANTLE'S long-awaited move to its new facilities at Cockburn Central West cannot come soon enough for its NAB AFL Women’s team.
Both men's and women's teams have been sharing the now-cramped conditions at Fremantle Oval, with the whole club due to move into its new home in mid-to-late February.
AFLW, academy and community manager Wade Spilcker said Fremantle's new team would have its own areas at Cockburn.
"At the moment the club's bursting at the seams, so just the opportunity to get into the new facility at Cockburn will be fantastic for all areas of the club, but particularly the women's side of things," Spilcker said.
"The girls will have their own change rooms and dedicated space, along with access to shared areas.
"Moving into a facility that's world-class has everyone really excited."
Fremantle has already started its daunting travel schedule for the AFLW season, flying to Darwin and enjoying a win over Adelaide in a practice match on January 14.
The club starts and finishes the AFLW competition with trips to Melbourne and also has an engagement in Sydney (round three).
But the Dockers are choosing to look on the bright side of the logistical dilemma, saying players (most of whom work full-time) will be able to spend more time together as a team.
"It's a different (challenge) to what others will face, but it provides other opportunities as well," Spilcker said.
"From a playing side of things, it gives the girls an opportunity to be away together and spend more time developing as a close-knit bunch, which, given the time restrictions we have in-season, can be difficult.
"That should enhance on-field performances as well."
Spilcker said Fremantle fans had embraced the women's side.
Being the only AFLW team in Western Australia, the Dockers may have even picked up a few supporters from other clubs along the way.
"It's been fantastic – every single training session we've had some fans down," he said.
"We've been overwhelmed by the support for the team. Our supporters have been really engaged and have a thirst for information. It's been terrific."
