COLLINGWOOD has confirmed that high-profile recruit Daniel Wells will miss round one as he continues to battle a calf injury.

Wells, 32, missed the JLT Community Series after receiving a knock to the calf during a practice match between Collingwood's VFL team and Vermont in mid-February.

Although the Magpies initially claimed Wells would train the following week and step up his workload through the pre-season, they confirmed on Tuesday he would miss the season-opener against the Western Bulldogs.

Football director Geoff Walsh told collingwoodfc.com.au the Magpies were pleased with Wells' progress but he would not be available for round one.

"He is starting to get some good conditioning into his legs, but he won’t make round one," Walsh said.

"We are all aware of that, but having said that, we are really pleased that he is going forward and he is starting to feel good, particularly in relation to his calf."

Meanwhile, Magpies skipper Scott Pendlebury was on light duties at training on Tuesday afternoon, but the star midfielder has assured nervous supporters he will fit to play in round one.

Pendlebury was a late withdrawal from the Magpies' final JLT Community Series game against Richmond in Moe on Sunday after experiencing tightness in his Achilles.

The skipper did some low intensity run-throughs and kicking to teammates at the front of the group, but is set to up his program later in the week.

Pendlebury declared earlier on Tuesday he would be a certain starter against the Western Bulldogs in the opening round.

"It was just precautionary on the weekend," Pendlebury said.

"I'll be fine for round one. I'll train Friday."

Emerging midfielder Jordan De Goey (quad) trained strongly with the main group, while Levi Greenwood (hamstring soreness) jogged laps during the short session at Olympic Park Oval.

De Goey, who also managed a toe issue over pre-season, worked with the main group on their stoppage setups in the middle of the ground.

Greenwood appeared to be restricted on the track after missing the club's last pre-season hit-out against the Tigers.

But the Pies are confident the tough midfielder will be able to increase his workload when the team trains again on Friday.

Star forward Jamie Elliott remains touch-and-go for round one due to a lingering ankle issue and will need to prove his fitness at training next week.
