GREATER Western Sydney's comeback win over Collingwood might not have been the most glamorous in the club's history, but in terms of significance there might not have been any better.

The Giants trailed by 26 points at the first break, but led by Josh Kelly (36 possessions and 11 tackles) and Jeremy Cameron (six goals), pulled off a thrilling three-point win, despite the loss of Aidan Corr (concussion) and Sam Reid (concussion) before half time, and vice-captain Stephen Coniglio (ankle) early in the last term.

GWS will be sweating on Coniglio's scans, after the star midfielder injured the same left ankle that kept him on the sidelines for the first six games of the season.

Coach Leon Cameron said after the match that it was a character-building victory for his side.

"It's right up there as a fantastic win for our club, it was a really good fight back from where we were," he said.

"We know we're going through a patch of injuries at the moment, but we've just got to deal with it, and I thought the guys showed an enormous amount of character and courage to get the game back on our terms.

"It's really pleasing that a young side can do that under pressure, and it's good we've won a couple of close ones this year, because last year I think we only won the one close one out of six.

"We know we've got some talent, and a bit of that talent is sitting in the grandstand at the moment, but I just thought the guys found a different way to win the game, and these sorts of games are fantastic experiences for us to play in."

Former No.1 draft pick Lachie Whitfield repaid Cameron's faith in his first game back from his six-month suspension for allegedly avoiding a drug test, and gathered 25 possessions in a typically hard-running performance.

"He makes outstanding defensive decisions which a lot of people are not going to see, and to come straight in shows us he's heading in the right direction," Cameron said.

"He wants to make sure that he's a very, very good footballer in his own right and that’s why we rate him really highly.

"He made a mistake but we all make mistakes, and we're really rapt that he's gotten up off the canvas."
