VETERAN Fremantle ruck Aaron Sandilands will have surgery on his right hamstring, confirming he will not play again this season.

There was damage to the tendons in the injury the 34-year-old suffered in the first quarter of the Dockers' nine-point loss to St Kilda at Domain Stadium last Sunday.

Fremantle’s general manager of football operations, Chris Bond, told the club website on Tuesday Sandilands had experience with this sort of procedure.

"At this stage, the medical advice is that Aaron will require a rehabilitation phase of eight to 10 weeks, ruling him out for the remainder of this season," Bond said. 

"Once the rehabilitation process is completed, we expect Aaron to be fully fit and available to start the 2018 pre-season on schedule.

"Aaron had a similar operation on his left leg in early 2013 and made a full recovery."

Sandilands is contracted for 2018 after he signed a new deal in June.

He will be 35 at the start of next season and has lined up in a combined 15 games since the start of 2016.

The ruck has twice won the club's best and fairest.
