GREATER Western Sydney's ankle curse has claimed another victim with young gun Tim Taranto likely to miss more than two months of footy.
Taranto twisted his right ankle awkwardly during the third quarter against the Brisbane Lions, and while the Giants initially thought the damage was minor, they've confirmed he will be out for 8-10 weeks after undergoing surgery.
The tough 19-year-old was taken with pick No.2 at last year's NAB AFL Draft and has enjoyed a solid season, averaging 15.2 possessions in his 12 games so far playing across half-forward and through the midfield.
He joins Stephen Coniglio (twice), Ryan Griffen (twice) and fellow draftee Will Setterfield, who have also suffered significant long-term ankle injuries this season, but GWS head of athletic performance David Joyce was hopeful Taranto could get back in time for this year's finals series.
"This is a bitter blow for Tim who's been terrific in his debut season so far," he said.
"The damage to Tim's ankle was significant enough that surgery was required before commencing a thorough rehabilitation program.
"Tim's shown great resilience so far in his short AFL career and we remain confident that we'll see him return to the field later this season."
It's been a shocking season on the injury front for GWS, with Coniglio, Griffen, Setterfield and Tendai Mzungu (hamstring) missing most of the season, and Nick Haynes (hamstring), Devon Smith (knee) and Jacob Hopper (back/finger/ankle) also spending plenty of time on the sidelines.
High-profile recruit Brett Deledio still hasn't played a game for the club at any level thanks to issues with both calves, while defenders Matt Buntine and Adam Kennedy are already done for 2017 after undergoing knee reconstructions.
