NORTH MELBOURNE veteran Andrew Swallow, who wants to join his younger brother David at Gold Coast, made the same trade request last year, his manager has revealed.

Swallow's manager Colin Young met Kangaroos officials on Tuesday to discuss a potential move to the Suns to fulfill a longtime ambition for the siblings.

Swallow, 30, still has one year left on his contract with North but on Monday told Melbourne radio station 89.9 Light FM he would "love" to play alongside his brother

The Roos subsequently insisted they wouldn't stand in the way of their 224-game former skipper, while the Suns said they were open to exploring the idea.

Swallow struggled this season, playing 16 games after enduring his first VFL stint since 2008.

His opportunities at North might also be limited given the club's playing list is in transition after ending the careers of a handful of veterans since the end of last season.

Young conceded it would be difficult to engineer a trade given it's late in the trade period and the Suns are busy trying to land Fremantle young gun Lachie Weller and secure an equitable deal with Geelong for departing superstar Gary Ablett.

"Hopefully tomorrow I'll catch up with Scotty (Clayton, the Suns' list manager) and see if there's a possibility that it can be done," Young told NAB AFL Trade Radio on Tuesday afternoon.

"We spoke about it in Grand Final week to Scott and at that stage it didn't look possible.

"But David's up there and his partner Georgie is pregnant, so apart from wanting to play with David and go and live on the Gold Coast, that will also assist David (by) having his brother (and sister-in-law Elise) around as a young father and both working together at the club.

"There was a lot of different reasons and Andrew even was mooted last year that he might want to get up there, and we did raise that last year (in the trade period) but unfortunately it couldn't happen.

"Hopefully this year it may, but we understand it may not."

Young believes a trade would be beneficial to all parties, with Swallow's experience and leadership qualities ideally suited to helping a young, developing club.

"I think Andrew's got two more years in him. But if not, the following year he can work with the (Suns) in the NEAFL and work with the young boys and get them on the right track," he said.

"In his exit interview with (North the message was), 'We're rebooting and next year you might play 10 or 15 games, or you might play two or 20 – we don't know.' This might help North Melbourne as well to fast-track a young boy.

"It's got all the attributes of being a good trade if it can be done."
