EX-CARLTON player Aisake O'hAilpin will sit out of football indefinitely as an Appeals Board determines whether to proceed with AFL Northern Territory's protest of a not guilty finding.
The NT Football League Tribunal cleared O'hAilpin on Wednesday night of a serious misconduct charge while playing for Nightcliff last week.
The 32-year-old Irishman, brother of 88-game AFL footballer Setanta O'hAilpin, allegedly headbutted former Saint Raphael Clarke, who was playing for St Mary's, up to two times in the first quarter of the match.
Field umpire Mark Noonan escorted O'hAilpin from the field for the rest of the game.
But conflicting evidence and a lack of vision of the incident saw the Tribunal find O'hAilpin not guilty, only for AFLNT to lodge an appeal on Thursday on the basis of an "error in law".
The Appeals Board considered the new evidence on Saturday and will reconvene at a later date, before deciding if the appeal will proceed.
An AFLNT statement said Nightcliff Football Club lodged an application to adjourn the appeal hearing, because "the player is not well enough to attend or play".
The Appeals Board accepted the application and the hearing won't go ahead until O'hAilpin is "well enough". Nightcliff has agreed O'hAilpin won't play in the meantime.
A two-match ban or more would see O'hAilpin deregistered from Australian football, because he will breach the 16-game suspension threshold.
He served a two-match penalty last year for headbutting an opponent while playing for Albury in the Ovens and Murray league.
O'hAilpin was on the Blues' list between 2005 and 2008, but never played an AFL match.
