ANTHONY Miles has elected to fight for a senior spot at Richmond, joining premiership clubmates Jacob Townsend and Jason Castagna in re-committing at Tigerland.

Miles had some interest from rival clubs after missing out on playing in Richmond's drought-breaking premiership and managing only five AFL games this season despite strong VFL form.

The 25-year-old, who won the club's VFL best and fairest, had played 42 matches in the previous two seasons at Punt Rd and has re-signed for another season.

"Anthony is highly regarded by his teammates and the club as a whole," Tigers list manager Dan Richardson said.

"His strong work ethic, contested ball-winning ability and commitment to the team are second to none.

"Despite limited opportunities in 2017, he is a proven AFL player, who will continue to make a significant contribution to the club."

Miles' close friend, late-season revelation Townsend, has also agreed to a new one-year contract after saving his career playing as a defensive forward in the last two rounds and finals.

Townsend, 24, was looking at his post-AFL options, including finishing his carpentry apprenticeship, until a Josh Caddy injury finally gave him a senior opportunity in round 22.

Eleven goals followed in the next two weeks, and the 2017 J.J Liston Trophy winner – the VFL's best and fairest – shut down the likes of Geelong’s Lachie Henderson and Adelaide’s Jake Lever in the post-season.

"Jacob played a significant role for the team in all our finals games, none more so than the Grand Final," Richardson said.

"He is a strong competitor and, having found his niche up forward, we expect he will continue to build on this in 2018 and beyond."

Castagna, a NAB AFL Rising Star nominee, played all 25 games for Richmond in 2017 and was fourth at the Tigers with 26 goals.

But it was the 21-year-old former rookie's defensive pressure, in combination with fellow small forwards Dan Butler and Daniel Rioli, that endeared him most.

He will be a Tiger for at least the next two seasons, after ranking first among Rising Star nominees for marks inside 50, tackles inside 50, score involvements and total bounces this year.

"We are really pleased with Jason's ongoing development and his work-rate, both on and off the track," Richardson said.

"His pressure around the ball is a highlight and his brand of footy was very much aligned to the team success this year."
