Hawthorn suffered a blow ahead of its clash with Gold Coast on Saturday, with former skipper Luke Hodge a late withdrawal with groin soreness.
The 32-year-old will join teammate Luke Breust (illness) on the sidelines for the Suns meeting, with the pair replaced in Hawthorn's selected side by Billy Hartung and Kade Stewart.
Hawthorn football manager Jason Burt said the champion veteran was close to playing but that the club would take no risks with his fitness.
"Luke presented with soreness in his groin earlier this week," Burt said.
"While we were confident Luke would be right for the game, unfortunately he's just not 100 per cent so we've decided to take a cautious approach."
Gold Coast also made a late change for the MCG game. Important midfielder Touk Miller was withdrawn due to illness and replaced by Jesse Lonergan, who will start on the interchange bench.
