COLLINGWOOD and its champion midfielder Dane Swan are not expected to make a call on whether he plays on in 2017 until he has his final operation on his injured foot in October.

Magpies coach Nathan Buckley said that while the club was keen for Swan to play next season, both parties will hold off on making any commitments until post-season.

Swan, who injured his foot in the first quarter of the opening round, visited his surgeon last week and was given the all clear to begin weight-bearing work.

Buckley said that work over the next six weeks would help understand how the foot had settled. 

Swan would then have an operation to remove screws inserted to help the injury repair.

"That is what we are going to be taking into account when we look beyond this year," Buckley said.

"Swanny and the club will sit down and make sure we are on the same page in regards to that because we don't have all the information."

Buckley said the Brownlow medallist and premiership player was keen at this stage to play in 2017 but Swan also wanted to ensure he made a smart decision when the time was right.

"He is keen to go around again, but he doesn't want to do it at a whim and he doesn't want to do it if he doesn't think it's something that is going to end well," Buckley said.

"So that's part of the discussion that we will have after the season."

Swan has played in 258 games with the Magpies, winning three best and fairest awards, a flag and being named All Australian five times.
