JUSTIN Leppitsch has put the heat on the Match Review Panel to take action against Gold Coast vice-captain Steven May, saying the game needs to treat concussion seriously.

May was reported for a sickening second quarter hit on Brisbane Lions ruckman Stefan Martin that had him stretchered from the field with concussion.

Martin played no further part in the Lions' 13-point win and appears to have escaped further injury.

Less than a month after losing young fullback Justin Clarke to retirement because of concussion, Lions coach Leppitsch said this decision was an "important one" for the MRP.

"I'm not here to hang anybody, it's up to the Match Review Panel to do their bit in that one," Leppitsch said.

"We've already lost a player to a career with concussion, so it's a very important one in footy I think, and it's one we've got to be very careful that we don't contribute to it."

May ran past the ball and left his feet to hit Martin high with his shoulder.

Lions players rushed in and had to be separated from their Gold Coast counterparts.

The Lions have also lost Matt Maguire and superstar Jonathan Brown to retirement in recent seasons due to concussion.

Suns coach Rodney Eade described May's act as "undisciplined" but was loathe to comment further.

"I haven't spoken to him after the game," Eade said.

"I spoke to him at half-time that he had to focus on his job in the second half rather than worry about that.

"It wasn't a great look. I'll have to go through the video with him."

Leppitsch said he was glad the incident happened on the stroke of half-time.

"I was glad it was 30 or 40 seconds before half-time so I got a chance to grab them to recompose them to say the way they could redeem this for Stef is by continuing to attack the ball and not the man.

"I thought the boys did that.

"If it was half-way through a quarter, potentially we might have gone a bit erratic, but thankfully we were able to reset quickly."
