BEN COUSINS' former Richmond teammate Alex Rance hopes the Brownlow medalist is getting the help he needs, after another bizarre incident in Western Australia.

Police took Cousins to hospital on Sunday night, after he was seen behaving erratically on Perth's Canning Highway.

"It really breaks my heart to see a real champion of the game, who could be such a positive role model, even now, even after so much has gone wrong for him," Rance told the AFL Exchange podcast.

"I just feel for his family, and really close friends who care for him.

"I just hope he can get better and find a bit of peace in his life."

WA Police told AFL.com.au on Monday no charges had been laid after the latest incident.

"He was really lost, confused, making no sense at all," one witness told Channel Seven.  

"Seven or eight cop cars turned up left, right and centre."

Cousins has a long history of drug and alcohol problems dating back to 2006 when he infamously fled a booze bus, also on the Canning highway.

This latest incident is one in a long line for the former AFL star, who in 2015 was charged with reckless driving and also assessed at a mental health facility in Perth after being caught behind secure fences at Perth's Special Air Service Regiment.

West Coast is preparing to mark the 10th anniversary of its 2006 premiership later this week.
