IT MIGHT be called the NAB AFL Rookie Draft, but retreads were all the rage as clubs finalised their 2017 playing lists on Monday afternoon.
All up, 16 players re-entered the AFL system through the rookie draft and while some, such as new West Coast forward Drew Petrie and Hawthorn's Jack Fitzpatrick had been previously telegraphed, others such as Tendai Mzungu came as a major surprise.
Mzungu was reunited with his best mate and former Fremantle teammate Matt de Boer at Greater Western Sydney with the 15th selection overall.
And he wasn't the only former Docker to be granted a lifeline, with veteran defender Alex Silvagni joining Carlton, where the family name was first made famous by Serge Silvagni, the first cousin of Alex's father Eric. Alex is a second cousin to champion Blues full-back Stephen, who is the club's list manager.
The 34-year-old Petrie, a close friend and former teammate at North Melbourne of West Coast coach Adam Simpson finished up with the Kangaroos at the end of last season after 316 games over 16 seasons. He will add depth and experience to the Eagles, who will go into the season without No.1 ruck Nic Naitanui and quite possibly Scott Lycett as well.
Petrie will be an upgraded rookie from the start and could play against his former club in the opening round of the season at Etihad Stadium.
Others to find a new home include former GWS academy player Jake Barrett, who became a Brisbane Lion at pick No.2; Gold Coast's Henry Schade, now of Collingwood; and Shaun Edwards, formerly of GWS and Essendon, who heads back up the Hume Freeway, but now as a Sydney player.
The Suns were keen to re-draft Schade but the Pies got in first.
Those who were re-drafted by their previous clubs include Sam Shaw (Adelaide), Shaun McKernan (Essendon), Keegan Brooksby (Gold Coast), Josh Prudden (Western Bulldogs), Joel Patfull (GWS), Yestin Eades (Essendon), Andrew Galluci (Carlton), Fraser McInnes (West Coast) and Josh Deluca (Fremantle).
However, neither Shaw nor Patfull will play next year. They were redrafted to fulfill administrative requirements, which in Shaw's case include welfare support after he retired earlier this month due to concussion.
For the record, Essendon took South Adelaide ruckman Sam Draper from South Adelaide with the first selection overall.
Ruckmen were actually in vogue on Monday with Collingwood (Mitch McCarthy), Melbourne (Lachlan Filipovic), St Kilda (Rowan Marshall) and the Bulldogs (Nathan Mullenger-McHugh) all improving their ruck stocks.
Other notable selections include Calder Cannons small defender Zach Guthrie who joins Geelong to play alongside older brother Cameron Guthrie.
Richmond's first pick, Tyson Stengle, is a nephew of Sydney great Michael O'Loughlin. An exciting small forward blessed with genuine pace, he booted 22 goals for Woodville West Torrens in the SANFL reserves this season.
Ben Jarman became a Crow as a father-son selection, while Sam Simpson joined Geelong.
And with the last live selection, No.54 overall, the Swans selected Glenelg tall forward Toby Pink, who became an immediate YouTube sensation in September when he kicked the winning point from 70 metres out in the under-18 Grand Final against North Adelaide.
An incredible opportunity and to do it alongside my brother @mattdeboer9 has made my Monday! https://t.co/2jCQCfuZrK

Monday's draft most likely brought several AFL careers to their end. Xavier Richards has paid a huge price for rejecting a two-year contract extension from the Swans and has gone from Grand Final player to out of the AFL system altogether in the space of two months.
Collingwood 2010 premiership player Chris Dawes, a Melbourne player the last four years, was not selected, bringing his 121-game career to a close, while Mitch Brown's decision to leave West Coast to play in Victoria has also backfired with no club choosing to extend his 94-game career.
Former Melbourne captain Jack Grimes, Hawthorn pair Angus Litherland and Alex Woodward, North's Brad McKenzie and Fremantle's Clancee Pearce, as well as Port Adelaide's Cameron O'Shea also failed to find new clubs.
Among the highly-regarded youngsters not selected include Jonty Scharenberg, Hamish Brayshaw and Sam Walker, who were again overlooked after initially being considered as likely selections at last week's draft.
