COLLINGWOOD champion Dane Swan is expected to call time on his glittering 258-game career at the Magpies on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old will leave with a premiership, Brownlow Medal, three best and fairests and five All Australian selections next to his name.

After suffering a broken foot and Lisfranc injury in round one against the Sydney Swans, he decided he would not be able to make a successful return in 2017. 

He began to inform key people at the football club of his decision last week before spending last weekend in Sydney. 

Sources confirmed the club had a media conference at the Holden Centre planned on Tuesday afternoon.

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley told reporters after Saturday night's game he was aware of Swan's plans for 2017 but would not reveal whether he expected him to retire.

Swan became a favourite with Magpie fans for combining his nonchalant approach and self-deprecating sense of humour with consistent, match-winning football. 

At his peak he was among the game's elite midfielders, not only winning a Brownlow Medal in 2011, but finishing in third place in both 2010 and 2013.

He won the AFL Players' Association MVP award in 2009 and the 2010 Jim Stynes Medal when representing Australia in International Rules. 

He finished in the top three placings in the Magpies' best and fairest for eight out of nine seasons between 2008 and 2015, only missing out on a spot on the dais in 2014 when he played 17 games. 

He kicked more than 20 goals in six of his 14 seasons.

Despite a lack of pace, he was explosive off the mark and able to win centre clearances when Collingwood most needed them. 

Collingwood announced on Monday that Alan Toovey and Brent Macaffer had also retired.
