THERE is only three rounds left of the home and away season, but still plenty of chances for success in the land of Draftstars.
Here's the cheat sheet for round 21. For more information on Draftstars, the daily fantasy sports game, visit draftstars.com.au.
Western Bulldogs v Collingwood, Etihad Stadium, Friday night
Marcus Bontempelli (MID, $14,100) is all the rage after the young Bulldog was magnificent last week against North Melbourne with 118 points.
It was the sixth time he has reached triple figures in his past seven games, but here's the kicker: he is yet to score a hundred in his three games against Collingwood in the past. We think this Friday night might be the first.
If Bontempelli is too expensive for you, there are other well-performing Dogs to consider. Jason Johannisen (DEF, $13,250) was strong last week with 93 points and Shane Biggs (DEF, $11,350) has averaged 80 across the year, while Lachie Hunter (MID, $15,100) and Luke Dahlhaus (FWD/MID, $14,250) only scored 75 last week so will be ready for bigger showings.
The Pies disappointed last week against Richmond but Rupert Wills (MID, $10,950) has been exceptional in his first two weeks at AFL level. The mature-age Pies recruit scored 90 points last week and comes at a very good price.
Jack Crisp (MID, $12,700) continued his solid season of scoring, while Steele Sidebottom (MID, $15,850) showed why he should be a consideration every week with an average of 106 points.
Brisbane Lions v Carlton, Gabba, Saturday
For those of you who followed our advice in last week's cheat sheet to take a punt and go with Brisbane Lions ruckman Archie Smith (RK, $10,950), we salute you. Smith scored 84 in his second game and proved to be a great value choice for that important ruck position.
There weren't many highlights from the Lions' 138-point drubbing at the hands of Adelaide, but midfield duo Tom Rockliff (MID, $15,700) and Ryan Bastinac (MID, $11,550) both scored in the 120s. It was Bastinac's highest score of the season.
Carlton wasn't much better than the Lions last round, losing to St Kilda by 71 points. But it didn't hinder their Draftstars scoring, with five Blues hitting triple figures in the defeat. Kade Simpson (DEF, $14,750) led the way with 135 points, which pushed the veteran's average to 100.8 for the season.
Ed Curnow (MID, $14,500) isn't the most fashionable player but is worth taking a look at in this game given he'll likely be following around Rockliff through the midfield.
Hawthorn v North Melbourne, MCG, Saturday
Last week's defeat was a blip for the Hawks, and we expect them to rebound strongly against North Melbourne. But both sides contain many Draftstars matchwinners worth considering, which is why we're going to play this one in turbo format.
You'll need to pick one player from six different categories, starting with your marquee player in category one.
We'll stick with what we know, and we know that Jordan Lewis (MID, $15,450) is a champion Draftstars pick. He gets the nod in tier one. Jack Gunston's (FWD, $13,700) average of 92 sees him join the squad as the second tier choice, while Roos star Daniel Wells (MID/FWD, $12,600) is the player we'd take from tier three.
Trent Dumont (MID, $11,250) might not have as many runs on the board as the other players in tier four but his recent form has been excellent and he's lifted his average to 82 points, so gets the call-up.
Hawks ruckman Ben McEvoy (RK, $10,600) and Brendan Whitecross (FWD/DEF, $9250) make up the team in tiers five and six respectively, with the last two players probably the hardest to select.
Greater Western Sydney v West Coast, Spotless Stadium, Saturday
Shane Mumford (RK, $13,100) is defying Draftstars convention. The Greater Western Sydney ruckman has racked up just 37 kicks for the year – not generally a signifier of a good scorer – but he remains one of the best ruckmen out there.
Last week Mumford was the Giants' second highest scorer against Gold Coast with 106 points, and he's averaged 86 for the season. Lachie Whitfield (MID, $12,750) was also impressive upon returning to the Giants' side with 98 points, while Jonathon Patton (FWD, $8350) scored well above his average with 79 points (he has averaged 56 in 18 games this year).
The Chris Judd deal netted West Coast Josh Kennedy (FWD, $13,700) and Chris Masten (MID, $11,350) almost a decade ago, and if Draftstars coaches had that pair in their side last weekend they would have been well on the way to a win. The duo shared 228 points and ran rampant against Fremantle in the local derby.
Jamie Cripps (FWD, $10,750) is flying under the radar as a potential pick-up in your forward line. The Eagles goalkicker has averaged 87 points over the past five rounds and would be a unique choice for your side at his modest price.
St Kilda v Sydney Swans, Etihad Stadium, Saturday night
The Saints dominated the Blues last week, with 10 players scoring more than 90 in their obliteration of Carlton.
But beyond that group, of which included regular performers Jack Newnes (MID, $13,150), Seb Ross (MID, $14,650) and Leigh Montagna (MID/FWD, $15,000), there was another tier of Saints who you can consider.
First-year Saint Jade Gresham (MID, $8350) scored a career-best 80 points last week and is a cheap pick if you need a young midfielder. Blake Acres (MID, $9600) was also excellent with 82 points.
The Swans aren't too shabby themselves. Tom Mitchell (MID, $15,950) announced himself as a genuine A-Grade Draftstars midfielder with 139 points last week, while Isaac Heeney (FWD, $11,200) put in his best game of the season with 127 points against Port Adelaide.
Dean Towers (FWD, $9800) isn't the most popular pick but has averaged 74 points across the year and last week gathered 83, while Jake Lloyd's (MID, $12,100) 107-point effort was his best score since round one when he collected 110. He has averaged 88 over the past three weeks.
Port Adelaide v Melbourne, Adelaide Oval, Saturday night
If there's any player that is worth his value this weekend it's Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn (RK, $15,250). Gawn notched a round-high 144 points last week in a dominant ruck display and this week takes on Matthew Lobbe, who is playing his first match since round five, and the undersized Jackson Trengove.
For a cheaper pick, Clayton Oliver (MID, $9900) last week scored a career-high 92 points against the Suns. The physical first-year Demons midfielder played only 68 per cent game so with more time looks a nice choice at a cheaper price.
Melbourne's midfield trio Jack Viney (MID, $15,000), Nathan Jones (MID, $14,200) and Dom Tyson (MID, $13,350) all reached the 120-point mark last week, and continue to show themselves as great options for your Draftstars side. Viney has elevated his game to be a premium pick with an average of 103.
The Dees haven't beaten Port Adelaide in Adelaide since 2000, though, so you might think it shapes as a better day for the Power. Ollie Wines (MID, $14,750) has been the shining light for fantasy coaches this season from a Port perspective, averaging 98 points and last week bringing in 111.
Brad Ebert (MID, $13,400) should rebound from his poor score of 57 last week to get back to his average of 84 points, while Sam Gray (MID/FWD, $12,250) has scored well when he plays and last week scored 95 points.
Essendon v Gold Coast, Etihad Stadium, Sunday
The Bombers tried to play a game of 'keepings off' in last week's loss to Geelong, and it has been their style in recent weeks as they attempt to avoid too many heavy defeats.
It made for lots of kick-to-kick in the backline, which saw defenders Mitch Brown (FWD/DEF, $9700), Martin Gleeson (DEF/MID, $9950) and James Kelly (MID, $14,650) share 42 uncontested marks. Brown took 18, and helped him to 131 Draftstars points. Kelly is the player you should pick from that trio – he's averaged 99.7 points for the year as one of Essendon's top-ups.
The Bombers have struggled against some key forwards this season, and Gold Coast star Tom Lynch (FWD, $12,400) should be eyeing a big haul on Sunday as he chases the Coleman Medal. Lynch scored 100 points last week against GWS and has enjoyed a coming-of-age year.
Of some cheaper options at the Suns, Kade Kolodjashnij (DEF, $11,450), Jack Martin (FWD, $10,700) and Mitch Hallahan (MID, $8350) also put in scores well above their season average last week. Defender Rory Thompson's (DEF, $6500) score of 88 points against the Giants was almost double his 46-point average, so probably don't choose him with much confidence he'll back it up.
Richmond v Geelong, MCG, Sunday
Draftstars' daily fantasy format allows participants to play in a range of contests across a weekend, with different levels of buy-in. There are formats to suit everyone: head-to-head battles, live draft options and even guaranteed prize pools even if the allotted number of teams is not filled.
We like the turbo mode of Draftstars, because it sums up the game. It's quick to select, can revolve around a single AFL match, and it's a simple process in selecting your squad.
The toughest decision in this category surely has to be whether you pick Cat Patrick Dangerfield (MID, $17,500) or Tiger Dustin Martin (MID/FWD, $15,800) in tier one. It's the battle of the Brownlow Medal fancies and not much separates the pair – Dangerfield has averaged 120 points a game and Martin has averaged 107. We're going with Dangerfield.
In tier two we're adding Geelong midfielder Mitch Duncan (MID, $13,950), before another Cat, Jimmy Bartel (DEF/MID, $13,500), gets the nod for tier three. We could fill our turbo side exclusively with Cats, but Tigers defender Alex Rance (DEF, $10,650) has averaged 85 the past three weeks and is in cracking form so gets in in tier four.
Zac Smith (RK, $10,400) is our tier five player, while Adam Marcon (RK, $10,000) has averaged 80 points in his first two games so will be our sixth-tier choice in our turbo team.
Fremantle v Adelaide, Domain Stadium, Sunday
We really hope you took our advice and loaded up on Crows last week. They had 10 players surpass the 100-point barrier in a smashing win over the Brisbane Lions.
Adelaide has shown it can really put poor sides to the sword, and three of its top four scorers were forwards: Tom Lynch (FWD, $13,750), Taylor Walker (FWD, $11,450) and Josh Jenkins (FWD, $12,000). You'd back this crew to again outplay the underperforming Dockers on Sunday.
Brad Crouch (MID, $12,850) has also hit his straps, and enters this round with an average of 102 points over the past five weeks, including three centuries.
In comparison, only one Docker – Lee Spurr (DEF, $11,450) – cracked the ton last week. Lachie Neale (MID, $16,350) was a little down on his regular standards with 91 points, but Ed Langdon (FWD/MID, $9100) played well and gathered 75 points as he continues to progress his career. Avoid the Dockers.
