HAWTHORN has used the selection it gained for trading Sam Mitchell to West Coast to select Harry Morrison, a defender from Murray Bushrangers who is the cousin of Brisbane Lions skipper Tom Rockliff.

The Benalla-product is a rangy defender who overcame a knee reconstruction in 2014 that kept him out of football for 14 months. 

Recruiting manager Graeme Wright said that players picked late in the NAB AFL Draft often take time so the club would give Morrison a chance to develop. 

"He certainly has a bit of a pedigree as a footballer so we think he has got a chance," Wright told AFL.com.au. 

Rockliff tweeted his congratulations to Morrison, having had many conversations with him over the years about how he was developing.

The Hawks stunned the football world when it traded both Mitchell and Jordan Lewis during this year's NAB AFL Trade Period as it facilitated trades for emerging young midfielders Tom Mitchell and Jaeger O'Meara. 

Although the initial trade for Sam Mitchell saw the Hawks receive picks 52, 70 and 88 in exchange for Mitchell, 54 and 72, the Hawks traded out picks to secure Tom Mitchell from Sydney and Jaeger O'Meara from Gold Coast.

After the bidding for academy and father-son prospects, the Hawks eventually entered the draft at pick No.74 with Morrison. 

It then took the soldier-out, soldier-in philosophy of coach Alastair Clarkson to its endpoint when it brought in a player named Mitchell Lewis.

Selection No. 74 – Harry Morrison
Graham Wright says: A half-back flanker who can move up and play on the wing. He is really composed and kicks the ball both feet. Overall we think he has a chance. When you bring them in this late you hope they will have some kind of impact at some stage but we know it probably won't be straight away. 

Selection No. 76 – Mitchell Lewis
Graham Wright says: Tall forward who can pinch-hit in the ruck a little bit who is raw but athletic. He covers the ground well and is an all-round sportsman. We think he has got a lot of upside.
