YOUNG Brisbane Lion Rhys Mathieson will see a surgeon on Monday after scans revealed he had a fractured cheekbone following a bump from Jeremy Cameron.

Cameron was reported for the incident in Sunday's NAB Challenge win against the Lions and now faces a nervous wait to see if he will be available for round one.

As Mathieson disposed of the ball, Cameron came from the teenager's right hand side and left his feet to deliver the bump.

The Lions are fully expecting Mathieson will require surgery – as early as Monday night – but are still unsure how complex it could be.

They are hopeful he might miss just a couple of weeks.

Mathieson's injury comes on the back of confirmation ace midfielder Dayne Beams would be out indefinitely with knee tendinitis.

Beams has recovered strongly from off-season shoulder surgery, but the tendinitis has restricted his training and could keep him out of the first month of the season or longer.

In better news, young forward Jaden McGrath was cleared of a fracture in his left shoulder after leaving Sunday's game following a heavy collision with Giant Toby Greene.

Lions medical staff will assess him once the injury starts to settle.
