FORMER Melbourne co-captain Jack Trengove has been dropped from the side to face Adelaide on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.

Trengove, 24, played three consecutive AFL games and averaged 17 disposals after missing over two years with debilitating foot injuries.

The former skipper was the second pick in the 2009 draft and is out of contract at season's end.

Fellow former co-captain Jack Grimes remains on the outer, named as an emergency for the 11th time this season.

Melbourne is hopeful Josh Wagner will miss only a week after a knee injury, while Clayton Oliver has been omitted.

Jeff Garlett, Matt Jones and James Harmes are back into the team to face the Crows.

Star midfielder Jack Viney has been named despite leaving training early on Friday with hamstring tightness.

Adelaide will enter the clash unchanged following five consecutive wins.

The Western Bulldogs have pulled a selection shock, recalling veteran ruckman Will Minson, comeback kid Clay Smith and dashing defender Jason Johannisen for Saturday's crunch match against the Sydney Swans.

Dogs coach Luke Beveridge has reacted savagely to the thumping 57-point loss to Geelong before the bye, culling Tom Campbell, Fletcher Roberts, Josh Dunkley, Mitch Honeychurch and losing Bailey Williams (knee) to injury. 

Minson and Smith come in for their first games for the season, with the latter making a long-awaited return from a third right knee reconstruction after two impressive VFL performances. 

Meanwhile, Johannisen will bypass the reserves and come straight back into the AFL after tearing a hamstring tendon in round four, while acting skipper Easton Wood also returns from a hamstring after missing the past three games.

The Swans have brought back defender Jeremy Laidler after a knee complaint, dropping Aliir Aliir for the SCG clash.

Carlton has named Jack Silvagni for one of the most anticipated debuts in Blues history against arch-enemy Collingwood on Saturday night at the MCG.

The 18-year-old is the son of Stephen, the AFL Team of the Century full-back, and grandson of fellow Carlton legend and two-time premiership player Serge.

Jason Tutt makes way for Silvagni, while Collingwood has kept faith with spearhead Travis Cloke and dropped sidekick Jesse White for returning young gun Darcy Moore.

Veteran big man Tyson Goldsack also returns after four games in the VFL coming back from a thumb problem, while Jonathon Marsh has picked up a calf injury and goes out of the side that will be searching for redemption after a round seven loss to the Blues.

Port Adelaide will be aiming to keep its season alive in Friday night's crucial encounter with Richmond, and has regained key forward Jay Schulz, tall backman Jack Hombsch and called up rookie Kane Mitchell after a standout SANFL season.

Sam Gray and Paul Stewart have been axed, while Dougal Howard (knee) is injured.

The Power and Tigers both have a 6-7 record and the loser at Adelaide Oval is likely to tumble three games outside finals.

Richmond has made two changes from last week's win over the Brisbane Lions, bringing back talismanic ruckman Ivan Maric to replace Shaun Hampson (knee) and Ben Griffiths also returns for the omitted Jacob Townsend.

Coming off a morale-boosting upset of the Cats, the Saints have brought in Tom Lee and small forward Jack Lonie for the test of their credentials on the road against Gold Coast.

Nathan Wright (shoulder) and Jimmy Webster (hamstring) go out of the side, while the Suns have made three key changes.
