HAWTHORN forward Luke Breust says he was "rattled" by speculation he might be included in a trade for Hawks targets Jaeger O'Meara or Tom Mitchell.

Breust, 25, told reporters he would certainly be at Hawthorn next season.

He admitted the speculation had been unsettling and said it had emerged unexpectedly.

"Probably early on it did rattle me a little bit, but since then I guess it's all just part of the AFL industry these days and you just have to accept that, and just roll with the punches," he said.

"That's what I've been doing the last few weeks. I got away to NSW and got away from it all and that's probably been good for me."

Breust denied rumours that he was told before a final this season that he would be trade bait. 

"That's definitely not true. I wasn't told anything before that final, so that's definitely not true."

O'Meara hasn't played at senior level since 2014, but Suns chairman Tony Cochrane has said his club wants a player in return for the onballer.

Breust, who has played 140 games and kicked 271 goals, is contracted until the end of next season.

Gold Coast football manager Marcus Ashcroft said on Monday someone of Breust's ilk would be required for the Suns to make the trade.

"I think it's in that category," Ashcroft said.

He said up to eight Hawks were in the discussion to be traded to the Suns.

"We're not going to go into the individual names of those players, but there would be anywhere between six to eight players discussed," he said. 

"That, coupled with draft selections, it's all part of the mix." 

Hawthorn list manager Graham Wright denied on Monday that Breust would be traded.

"I wouldn't have thought that's going to happen," he said.
