PLANNING is underway for United States Vice President Joe Biden to attend Sunday's Carlton-West Coast game at the MCG. 

Secret service representatives have scoped out the home of football in preparation for the potential visit from Mr Biden and his family. 

Mr Biden is expected to travel to Australia this weekend for the opening of Melbourne's new Peter McCallum Cancer Centre in Parkville.

He has a long-standing commitment to cancer research, after his son Beau lost a battle with brain cancer last year.

It's understood the 73-year-old vice president, who is in his final year in office as president Barack Obama's second-in-charge, is keen to check out Australia's indigenous game.

Details of the visit have been tightly guarded, and confirmation of the vice president's itinerary isn't expected until the last minute.

The vice president is expected to fly into Melbourne on Air Force Two later this week. 

Preparations for the trip to Melbourne are being lead by Victoria's Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Details of how the vice president's motorcade will get to the MCG are still being worked out. 

It is unclear what security implications there could be for fans arriving at the ground if the visit goes ahead. 

AFL.com.au contacted numerous parties involved in making arrangements for Mr Biden's Australian visit, but all were reluctant to comment.
