ESSENDON is happy to part with defender Michael Hibberd for a second-round pick, however it would prefer it was this year's rather than a 2017 pick.

The Demons are considering whether they are prepared to hand over this year's second-round pick – which is currently No.28 – or whether they can potentially negotiate for the Bombers to accept their offer of a future second-round pick.

Hibberd, 26, requested a trade to the Demons this season to play under Simon Goodwin, who coached him as an assistant at Essendon.

Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro told essendonfc.com.au he expected a deal to happen without too much fuss.

"Their situation is they've offered a future second and we'd just like to get this year's second round so we're discussing that with them at the moment." Dodoro said.

Melbourne confirmed to AFL.com.au that was a reasonable reflection of the situation.

Essendon holds the first pick in this year's NAB AFL Draft as well as pick No.20. It has declared an interest in trading in midfielders in this year's draft.

The Demons have built a talented young list by using two top 10 picks in the past four seasons and trading future draft picks.

If they traded out this year's second-round pick, their first selection in the draft would be pick No.46.
